UK-based careers in green/environmental sector?

Options
I leave university next summer and would very much like to get involved in this kind of work. The trouble is, any tentative research I have done so far only reveals openings in voluntary work. I would love to do something to help the local wildlife/environment as a full-time job, but is it possible to do this and still pay the bills?

Get yourself down to your university careers service, they generally have a wealth of info.

You'll need to have an idea about what specific area you want to work in; conservation/ecology, the environment, environmental policy etc.

    Try: http://www.endsjobsearch.co.uk/jobs/

    http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/jobs/

Also local authority have a section that deals with environmental concerns but you will probably have to check the individual websites.
  • Many thanks. I'd prefer something not office-based, though. I want something where I'm actually 'getting my hands dirty', so to speak!

Have a look through the vacancies on here, they may need a relevant degree for certain jobs. I know of a few palces in Northumbreland that house their staff too. It would be nice to live for 'free' doing something you love.
  • Not sure if it's your thing but how about waste and resource management. Includes all sorts of things from waste minimisation to new technologies for handling waste. Try the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management as a starting point https://www.ciwm.co.uk.

Many people come from an environmental background as the industry is so broad. If not, they can probably signpost you to somewhere else such as the Environment Agency etc.

    Hope this helps!

You might find some opportunities at forum3. This would be third sector, but there are environmental bodies with paid roles there, I think.

    https://www.forum3.co.uk

Filled with voluntary sector jobs and advice, and you can get a free ticket to attend on the site - it's very soon though.
for more info check out www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk . You'll find me there.

yes, I realise I may appear cold and heartless a lot of the time.
  • Some useful sites there, thanks very much.

Ideally I'd like to get involved in 'clean-up' operations around the countryside etc.
