"Link Financial Outsourcing": strange letter

This morning I received a very strange letter from a company called Link Financial Outsourcing at a PO Box in London SE1.

"Dear Mr Jay

An application for credit (bank loan, credit card, etc.) occurred in the name of:

APPLICANTS NAME: Mr Jay

This application was at an address different from your own however that address is currently linked to your own home address.

We ask that you contact our offices to discuss this on 02920 808610

Your sincerely,"

Any idea what this is about ? Around 10 years ago I did rack up a couple of defaults when I hit financial trouble but as far as I know all debts were cleared at least several years ago.

Something about this letter doesn't smell good to me - I know for a fact that I haven't applied for credit in ages - so I am reluctant to call them ...

LINK Financial is a leading European purchaser and servicer of performing and non-performing receivables.

From there own website, basically they are a debt collector as i guess you worked out.
There is no application for credit, they are fishing for information. So I would ignore it. only if they chase you with some worthwhile information, then go and send the prove it letter and work out what it is.

From CAG forums, a similar issue - http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?240111-Link-Financial-Outsourcing-Ltd

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

Well I didn't contact them and now they have written to me with details of a specific alleged debt which must be well over 8 years old.

I shall use the letter suggested earlier in the thread but in the meantime, will this appear on my credit history ?? It wasn't there a few months ago - no doubt because of its age - but as I'm about to apply for a mortgage I'm concerned that this alleged debt might prove a problem ....
  • Hi, got one the initial letter the same as you yesterday morning, keep us updated as to the outcomes, it does seem like they are trying to confirm that you are at the address, had this a few times myself but I never confirmed any of them

Debts over 6 years old can't legally appear on your credit file as they're statute barred. So if it does appear it absolutly shouldn't have and you can take steps to get it removed. I don't think it's desperately likely they will try it though.
I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(
  • sorry to hijack your post but like a fool i rang these people back! as soon as they answered the phone i realised what they where but thy now have my mobile number and have rang me back, i pretended they had the wrong number what can i do now? any suggestions? :(
  • I have just had a letter from this company asking for over £3k for who knows what. I didn't call them but I have just stupidly sent them an email from a hotmail account so they now know I live here. The letter does not seem right. Any debt collection letters I have ever seen have stated the origin of the debt.

    Please help, I am stressed!
