Short long dresses???

I love the look of maxi dresses but just can't find any that would fit me to wear with flat shoes. I'm 5'4" which while isn't mega tall isn't exactly dwarflike but all the dresses swamp me. I could wear lovely heels with them but I'd like to be able to wear them more casually and where I might be on my feet for longer periods of time.
I can't do petite as I'm a bit broad across the back and shoulders, and so I just get pinched there.
Surely somewhere must sell affordable dresses that I don't need to be 6'7 to wear???

I'm 5 foot 2 and find river island quite good for maxi dresses that I can wear with flats, apart from that I just get my sewing kit out and do a bit of DIY customising.0

I'm 5 ft 2 as well and I don't think its just that they are so long, but even in the correct length they just look like they swamp anyone who isn't above average height. Good luck in finding something, but for me its just one trend I'm letting pass me by. Can't see them working in winter anyway. We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.0

I'm still hoping for a late summer

Use wundaweb (or cheaper equivalents) I don't think I've hemmed anything by hand for years. Just take your time, match up side seams and use a tape measure!

I've found some maxis do shrink a bit after first washing. I have the opposite problem...at 5'8"!!0
