Supermarket fish fillets in crumb/batter

Options
Is it only me that has bought these, frozen them, thawed them and cooked them only to find that they do not taste of fish and are almost inedible to all except the starving? I have just cooked Icelandic Cod breaded fillets and the fish appears to comprise of pressed cardboard, but tastes worse.
My chickens will have it tomorrow - and any other that I find in the freezer.
Birds Eye used to do decent cod fillets several years ago, but no longer.
I will have to buy fresh fish and make my own bread/battered fish for a fish 'n chip supper.
I still feel sick after trying eat the fish tonight!:(
At least they cannot !!!!!! up the tinned tuna and salmon!!!

The trick is to make sure you buy only whole/natural fillets not reformed portions.

Personally I prefer to pay a little bit extra at M&S for breaded fish as their fish is always sweet and succulent. Mostly though I use plain fish from the local market and do my own crumbs/toppings.

I agree with op-they taste of nothing these days. The best of a bad lot is the "lightly dusted" products. I bought some LD sole fillets from Lidl last week for 99p (half price)-they were 80% fish (I always check the % of fish in these products). They were okayish,, but tasted of very little. I think if I was eating them blindfolded I wouldnt have guessed that they were fish.
Usually I buy fresh or frozen plain fish, batter and deep fry myself-lovely!

Morrisons fresh breaded plaice fillets are quite good. They freeze well and taste okay when thawed and cooked. On the other hand, Farm foods deep frozen battered haddock really is like pressed cardboard. They do straight tuna as well and that's even worse.

  • Sainsbury's Taste the Difference breaded haddock or cod fillets are the best frozen ones I have come across. Not cheap but it is proper fish fillet not compressed left overs.

  • I quite like the Youngs Chip Shop ones, I got the Morrisons eat smart ones a while back and they are truly repulsive.

Read the LABEL ...lot of supermarket frozen fish [ well known names ] are packed in china and pacific /alaskan cod ect. used , best buy found was farmfoods plain cod ect in thick resealable clear plastic bags labled ATLANTIC / cod/haddock/smoked haddock, take out night before and leave in fridge ,only a few minutes to add breadcrumbs
  • Try Youngs Basa fillets with lemon tempura batter. Yum.
