Economy 7 Hours

Hi all,

I am having trouble finding out exactly when my economy 7 hours run.
  • I am on eon
  • I am in the midlands
  • I have a digital meter which i beleive uses teleswitching
Eon say "Electricity is supplied at a cheaper rate for 7 hours between 11.30pm and 8.30am". But that is 9 hours? I am aware that the hours are affected by BST and GMT (e.g 12-7 in GMT would be 1-8 on BST). I have also read on this forum that my meter may be auto swicthed between GMT and BST meaning the hours would be the same all year around?

All in all, i have no idea when exactly between 11:30 and 8:30 my 7 hours are? Does any one know?

Thanks in advance

With Eon myself. Have an ole dial timer. During summer its 01:30Hrs to 08:30Hrs GMT and when it flicks back to winter it should be 12:30Hrs to 07:30Hrs.

    So generally it says:
Electricity is supplied at a cheaper rate for 7 hours between 12.30am and 8.30am.
Page on Eon might be related:
Some Meters are set up for split E7, 2 hours at 10.30pm to 12.30am and then 5hours 2.30am to 7.30am

Which for the Midlands should be Central Networks (part of Eon), but a different telephone number.

If you are on a teleswich the 7 hour period is the same Summer and Winter. Mine is 01.00 - 08.00 all the year round in the East Midlands.

If you have a mechanical time switch you can see from the dial the on/off settings. Check the actual time pointer for the current time the timeswich is working to. They do have a habit og gaining / loosing over the years so understand when you are actually getting the different rates in real time.

There is no rule for when you get your cheap rate of electricity. It varies and is not the same across an old electricity company area. Indeed it can vary from house to house on the same street.

Probably your best bet is to get in touch with the co9mpany that controls the metering equipment in your area (I believe that is EON in the East Midlands - but not 100& sure about this).

If you have a mechanical timeswictch, then it could vary from house to house.

Teleswitches operate on a regional basis, and the timings are controlled by the local Distribution Company, not the Meter Operator. The timings are declared for an area, and I have never known them to be changed.
  • hey all. Thanks for the replies. Eon say that for the midlands it is between 11:30 and 8:30 inc. my area (west mids). I will call them later. I would be supprised if i get a definate answer

    Summer time 11.30pm-12.30am and then 2.30am -8.30am.
Winter, when back to GMT 10.30pm-11.30pm and then 1.30pm-7.30am.

The electric companies allocate 7 hours according their requirements.

Really? 1 hour between 10.30pm-11.30pm GMT? What use is that?

What about the fact my meter is teleswitched. I thought that meant the times are the same GMT and BST?

    Hello trickytree1984,
You’ve had some good responses here. It can depend on your location and also the meter type. There’s also certain information linked to your supply which will tell you the exact times. If you’d like to email me via the email address in my profile page, I’d be more than happy to help.
    Thanks
