Son growing hair!

My 9 year old has decided that he wants 'surf-dude' hair, he normally has a no. 3 or 4 all over!!
He hasn't had it cut for about 6 weeks and it's now starting to look messy. Is it better to ignore the messy stage and just let it keep growing or should I keep getting it cut 'round the edges' until the top layers are down to the nape of his neck so it all groes at the same length?

My 8 year old when he was 7 started his growing his hair and he had a messy phase as he was always really short before, but we did keep it trimmed...so it did take longer to grow longer but looked more kempt. Saying that everyday he wakes up its stuck all over the place.
He shaved it all off at the beginning of summer but it has grown again now over the hols to surfer dude status...i wouldn't mind we live nowhere near the sea
he'll be ready for a trim before school on the 2nd.
I do prefer him longer and messy, makes him look really cute and its gone really blonde in the sun...but i'm biased of course

Is messiness not the point of the surf dude look?

Just persist with it, one day he'll wake up and it will looke cool. My DS1 who is almost 11 has been growing his for a couple of years, it is very very thick and sometimes he looked awful when it was growing, but he liked it, its important to let them express themselves. It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your window

The alternative is to wait until he's asleep and butcher it with the clippers on a number 2!!! JOKE - before I get slammed.0
