patching trousers

Options
CAn anyone give me a hand with this arcane art? I want to patch my one-year-olds trousers at the knee as he's gone through the material on all his pairs; yet they still fit him fine. I want to do a cute patch, maybe with some funky material - what kind of stitch do I need to do? I'm not very sewing-friendly. Also, any online places that might sell good patch material? Only need tiny bits.

Thanks!

If you are not too great with sewing I'd use Bondaweb (I presume you can still get it). It's like that iron on hemming tape but is used for appliques and patches. It might be best to patch with denim if at all possible as it is hardwearing or failing that any old clothes lying round the house which are going to be chucked. If you want to buy fabric, try quilting fabric as you can get really funky stuff in small amounts, ebay is prob the best for that or maybe even something from a charity shop's sale rail you could cut up?
  • i wouold use a bit of old denim or a piece from an old garment of mine or from a charity shop , many fabric shops will sell in 10cm amounts so mit may be worthwile if u see something u realy like asking them for just 10cm,

cut a square and turn the edges to he back and tack (running stitch) then tack patch over hole, make sure it is quite a bit bigger than the hole! there are invisible stiches you could use but if u want it to look cute maybe try blanket stitch in a contrasting colour as this is easy and strong!

    Thanks for the help guys!
  • If you don't have any spare fabric or old clothes to cut up, try Ebay. Lots of people sell packs of ready-cut patches for use in patchwork - all colours, plain / patterned. You might be able to find a suitable pack with fun kiddie patterns?

Good luck with your sewing efforts!
