A rather late entry into the instant messaging market, could fall by the wayside like so many other Google applications. Seems to rely of the people you want to talk to having gmail. otherwise you'll need other messengers to communicate with the ones who don't.
You'd be better off downloading Adium, which is compatible with google talk I think:
