Did you have an interview or was that just through the online assessment? Though I don't know you I'm sure you are not an idiot, times are hard and even jobs at M&S etc are in high demand.

    I'm sure you're not. ;)

Rejection is never nice though, been there myself on several occasions (one time I screwed up an interview for a job I really wanted and I just cried all evening).

    This shall pass. :)

It was in the interview and I screwed up the role play, how do I go about improving my interview and role play skills? I need to become smarter etc. I feel like a failure in all honesty.

i got turned down by M&S also years ago.....

don't worry they will have been swamped with applications, and you did really well to get an interview.

get people to practice with you.

sit in the kitchen wih your mates, and read section of plays to each other...... most importanlty DO NOT let this put you off. you are more than worthy of M&S you were just a little bit unlucky this time.

PS i think that M&S are muppets. they had me approach shoppers on the floor and ask them why they shopped there. - urm, because it's on they way home scary girl acosting me while trying to pick my dinner up......

Marks and Spencer's recruitment used to be very much driven by who lived closest to the shop, maybe this came into play too, I actually had this said to me at an interview with them many moons ago, 'why should I employ you when I can employ someone who lives around the corner'.

It stopped me shopping at M&S for years :), and when I finally went back (ironically looking for an interview suit) their quality had gone so far downhill - I mean, cheap fabric, hems hanging down, threads dangling all over the place - I just walked right back out again.

It makes me laugh when employers do that! From experience, I have found that the most reliable people are those who live furthest away - because they have to make the effort and they have to allow for unforessen circumstances etc. The people who live around the corner know to the second how long it takes them, and therefore leave everything to the last second, and are always late, or at least out of breath!
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

Absolutely spot on! I live 20 miles away, never late unless a stupid train decides it wants to mess my day up. Girl lives literally 10/15min walk away down the road from work, strolls in at 8.55/9am every single morning.

I'm not sure that you understand what roleplaying is! :o

OP, nimbo's idea of practising with friends is a good one, but I would focus on playing out different scenarios, not Hamlet! ;)
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Oh I'm sorry :( It's disheartening to not get a job but you have to keep trying. Have you got any other interviews lined up?

Do you think you were nervous or did you not know what do do? With nerves you can try rescue remedy and relaxation techniques. if you need help knowing what to say in a role play situation you could look on some websites like Monster for tips.

Best of luck with your search :)
  • Don't be disheartened.
Are you sure it was the roleplay that let you down?
What did you have to do and where do you think you messed up?
Maybe if you let us have some details someone can point you in the right direction.
