A couple of Kenwood Chef questions

Hi - for you kenwood experts!
  1. If I have a plastic bowl, will I have to adjust the beaters if I use a stainless steel bowl. I would like a stainless steel bowl for looks but not if I have to keep faffing about with the beaters
  2. When I make wholemeal bread the machine keeps making a clicking noise. It seems to be coming from the area where the hook goes into the machine and it gets hot there too. It isn't every revolution of the hook - it's more irregular than that. I use 650g as per the instructions. Do I need to cut down on the flour more or is this normal? It doesn't seem to happen with white flour so I assume the machine is working too hard with the heavier nature of wholemeal.

All help appreciated.:D

  • Regards 1: I'm pretty sure you don't - we have a Chef where I work and have 1 plastic and 2 steel bowls, and I interchange them all the time without adjusting the beaters.
We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment
  • :o oh goody a kenwood thread:j

    I just obtained a kenwood chef from freecycle:j :j :j :j

It came with a k beater and a balloon whisk. Which do I use for what please?

    confused:confused:

All I need now is a mincer attachment and sausage maker and my life will be complete:rotfl:
  • K Beater is best for creaming stuff - cake mixture, butter icing and recipes that call for rubbing in (scones are a doddle :D )

Ballon whisk for whipping cream, egg whites, mayonnaise etc.

Try to get yourself a dough hook if you can - bread making made simple for those of use without a bread maker.:j

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.
  • just deleted most of what I had written as penny Watcher got in first :D
You should be able to get a dough hook on eBay, they come up quite regularly, but make sure you buy one for your particular model of Chef.

foreverskint - you use it for everything!:rotfl:

I use mine almost every day - if I were you I would consider getting the blender attachment and the dough hook. We also have the multimill as well which is v. useful but not used as often, IYSWIM.

OP - if you have problems with the beater height, there is a little nut near where you slot the beaters in that you can adjust to alter the beater height. Hopefull you shouldn't need to do this though.
  • Hi thanks seraphina. I know about the the nut to adjust, but my point was that I do not want to keep adjusting as I switch between the bowls. I wondered if the stainless steel bowls were perhaps thinner than the plastic ones. It suggests in the instructions that it might be necessary, but I wondered if it was true in practice.

Foreverskint - I agree with seraphina about getting the dough hook. I love making bread with it and rarely buy bread now. I've found the K beater great for making mashed potatoes. good luck with getting the sausage maker. They seem to be like goldust if you have a 701 like me and go for a fortune on ebay. If you do a search of this forum, you will see a few posts on what attachments are recommended.

Ah, I see what you mean about the bowls. Would be interested in whether you need to adjust it or not as I've been thinking about getting another bowl.

I also use the K beater for mashed potato - it's the only way I can get anything edible when it comes to mashed veg!
  • well, Blairweech doesn't seem to have any problems with it.

Do you have any experience of what I said about the clicking noise mine makes? How much flour does yours comfortably take? My model is a 701a.
  • I did need to adjust the tools for use with a stainless steel bowl - but I can't remember if it was up or down. It wasn't much of a faff but would be if you were going to change bowls all the time. TBH I mostly use the kenlyte bowl as it is so much easier to wash up!!

No answer about the clicking noise - I usually use my Major if I am doing tough dough mixing - I can't think of a time when my A701 has made any strange noises.

If you have an A701 mincer with a rectangle hopper tray, you can get sausage adaptors to fit that are not too dear - I think it's only the mincers with round hopper trays that the adaptors don't work with.

  • As Foreverskint says 'goodee, a Kenwood thread'. PLease can anyone advise me about what model to go for. I used to have one years ago and sold it to buy a food processor. Now I find myself yearning for a Kenwood - I used to use the colander and paddles thing all the time for things like pippy apple and blackberry, and fruit with skins for jam or gloop to put on yoghurt, and it made perfect cakes ( I am planning for being a baking grandmother), but when I look in John Lewis for guidance the model numbers now being sold are completely different from what's being sold on e bay (I'm obviously not going to buy a shiny new one from JL) so I don't know what model to go for on e bay, any ideas ?
