Dairy Food Use By Dates?

Hiya,

I've tried searching the threads but cant find the one I thought this might be on so have had to ask for help :o.

I have some unopened cottage cheese in the fridge, it has a use by date of 8th Sept(!) :o, oh the shame!!!! Now, the lid isnt rising with a bubble like yogurt does when it goes bad so I dont know if its OK to use. I've not opened it for a sniff cause I hate the stuff and wouldnt know if it smelt normal or awful anyway, especially as it cheese and chive flavour.

Do you think it would be safe to use in a quiche? It will be cooked, obviously, does that make it any safer???

Sorry, dim question!

  • Not dim at all, and I'm normally one who gets a bit miffed by these dates, BUT in these circumstances that's a bit too out of date I think!!

Don't bin it too soon though 'cos someone knowledgeable might be along in a minute with a better answer.

I'd put it in the bin, loath as I am as well to throw food away, 50p isn't worth the result
  • If it's not opened, I find it doesn't go off quickly. I'd eat it, or at least try it. Obviously if it's bright pink when you open it, don't touch it, but I think it's unlikely when it's just 11 days over and unopened.

Righto, I'm off to open it, might even brave a sniff!!

Edit:OK, its looks all lumpy and white as expected but does have a bit of water on top, is that normal?? Also, smells just like cottage cheese with chive and onion.ie.a bit yuk but essentially normal.
