Red blotchy blemish skin

Im a right old looker! lol

My skin is not great, it is red and blotchy and also oily on forehead. I am quite prone to blackheads as well :(

Is it worth trying expensive Clinque or another product, or would a trip to a dermatologise be of any help?

Any body else with similar issues, and found a solution?

I exfoliate every morning, and moisturise with cream for oily skin. In the evening, i usually repeat. I also use wipes when i get home from work as by then my face looks a mess.

I use foundation for oily/combination skin
  • Hi,
It might be work having a chat with someone at Clinique - just becuase they are very well informed on skincare. It sounds to me like you could be making your skin more greasy by exfoliating too much rather than helping if you see what I mean.
I use Clinique and it is good - but they also give very good samples - especially of the treatment ranges.
    Best of luck

    Hi,

Just to point out that you shouldn't automatcially assume that just because something is expensive and designed for sensitive skin, it will be fine.

I recently ran out of moisturiser and remembered I had a sample from Eucerin. It was for a moisturiser/and blotchy skin. I didn't have blotchy skin at that time but used it for the moisturiser element. Then for 2 weeks I looked like the singing detective! I was in a right state. Really red sore skin! And remember, the cream was not just a moisturiser, but for the added problem if you had blotchy skin at the time.

Imagine the state I'd have been in if I had specifically bought it in the hope of helping my skin had it been blotchy at the time.

I wrote to Eucerin, but just got a form to fill in, and got the usual response "you must've been allergic to one of the ingredients"! No kidding! I'd never have thought of that!!! I was just amazed that I could've had such a bad reaction to a product designed for sensitive skin problems.

I usually use E45 at night and nivea day cream. Good luck, I know what it's like when you try your best to sort it, and it's especially annoying when you end up spending quite a bit on products that you find you can't use. Always keep a look out in Boots as they sometimes have sample sachets. Take a few to last a few days.

It could be that you have an allergy to mineral oil which is in expensive and cheap products, its a question of knowing what to look for and I'm still learning myself, there is a new range in Boots called Good things which is reasonably priced and has no nasties in it but unfortunatly for me I need an anti ageing product but I did find this thread useful https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2638405 - good luck:)

  • I might have misread, but exfoliating twice a day??? Im no expert but I would say that is far too much and could explain the blotches.

I went through a stage of my skin being all over the place a year or so ago (stress not eating properly lack of sleep etc...) and know how hard it was to get it back to normal.

Personally I would go back to basics.

Cleanser - try one of the hot cloths Liz Earle is great but personally I found the Soap & Glory one cheaper and better for my skin. If you use a cloth your skin is getting a mild exfoliation but nothing to harsh
(Their face mask is fab too)

I never bother with a toner, I find it a faff but, if you use it look out for ingredients like alcohol which will strip your skin and make it oiler! (rose water or is quite gentle and cheap!)

Moisturiser - is a very personal thing, it depends what you need from it but if you're washing to suit your skin then I wouldnt buy anything to pricey until it starts to settle down a bit.

One thing I would recommend and it isn't cheap but I found it totally amazing and now I cant live without it is Decleor Balm Neroli, it turned my skin around when going through a bad patch and now if I run out my skin knows it. Not cheap £32 for a 30ml pot from www.cheapsmells.com which is the cheapest I have found) but that will last me 6 months so works out fairly cheap as you only use it once a day.. well night!

As for a day cream.. the one I use is fairly pricey but after this runs out I will be on the look out for something cheaper.

Let us know how you get on, I still have one red blotch on my temple that I cant seem to get shot of, I am starting to think it might be something I use on my hair!
I wish I would take my own advice!
  • I would say you are definitely over exfoliating which is probably causing the red blotches, once a week is fine.

Have you tried the OCM, I have oily skin with a slight ruddiness and have found that not only does it cleanse and moisturise the skin with all-natural ingredients but I've also read that castor oil has anti-inflamatory properties which helps with the redness. OCM will also help with the blackheads.

I have tried so many skin creams n cleansers and after years of finding one that works for a few times then seems to stop working..to ones that break me out in spots...I finally found a routine that works for my combo skin.

I use products by the brand WITCH and 2 times a week I use a face mask..made of 3 spoons of plain yogurt and 1 spoonful of lemon juice. If you have really oily skin then up the mask to 3 or so times a week.

I would recommend Dayenne products(online) Their soap is about £10 a bar but lasts forever, PH neutral so doesn't overdry the skin and but it keeps spots at bay too(whole family is hooked on it)They do a full range(toner/creams etc) but we have found that the soap works well enough without having to buy the whole range.

It sounds like the products your using are too harsh, red blotches just sounds like a reaction to something, inflamed normally indicates some form of trauma to skin.

Maybe try milder products? also you mention you have oily skin, could it be that your products are too harsh and your skin is over reacting by producing extra oil to try to protect itself? maybe try for a good 2 weeks for a product which is for sensitive skin, mild and if you can, with no mineral oils, petroleum, paraffin or lanolin oils which can clog skin and cause some reactions.

I'd say see if you can visit someone from Dermalogica at a proper derm. rather then Clinique, a dermatologist is likely to know more. Many hair salons have a beauty section where you can find one.
