xx Getting It Right Buying Organic xx

I am reluctant to buy for the first time some fruits off of 'Abel and Cole'.... after noticing they had fair trade bananas in with their stock. I am after purchasing 'organic' not 'fair trade' organic, I hope this makes sense. I have seen the fair trade logo before in a supermarket this knocks my confidence in their all organic range. I have heard that I need to be careful because not all organic foods advertisements are organic as such. This has made me even more suspicious when I am looking for a good online organic retailer. If anybody could suggest an organic online retailer that is currently being used and are happy with the service please do provide a link and reason why you would recommend.

Thank you for your time reading this.....

Dominique.

xx.

Fairtrade and organic are different things and are not mutually exclusive. For example coffee beans are commonly fairtrade AND organic. In fact there is a very weak link of sorts between fairtrade and organic...if workers are treated with respect and paid a reasonable wage they are less likely to be spraying unhealthy chemicals around and are likely to use slower and more natural growing methods (as I say though this is only a weak link between the two).

What you need to look for when buying organic is a symbol or description of the certification. You are right that in some cases organic doesn't mean much...it is fairly meaningless in cosmetics. However for food if something says it is organic it has to be certified so just check that it carries the logo. Of course there may be some fake organic products but I doubt the big stores would knowingly pass off non organic as organic (some may slip through unknowingly I suppose).

The Soil Association website is probably a good place to do some reading and research.

  • Excellent reply from paulwf - always check for organic certification if you are at all unsure.

Abel & Cole's fruit and vegetables are all organic and Abel & Cole is certified by the Soil Association.
