Any Human Resource boffins out there ?

Hi

Started new job last Friday, and received a letter from my new employers, stating what my weekly hourly wage was and also my start times for work.

The letter goes on to say that I am on a 6 months Trail period - wow - 6 months trial - is this time span normal for an ordinary/plain admin job??

Cheers

Generally the civil service is 1yr, so 6 month seems quite good.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

    Hello fruitpie

You're lucky you've been told. At one job I was told that I'd got a pay rise because I'd successfully completed my six month probationery period...........nobody had told me I was on a probationery period.

  • some state 6 months we are on a 3 month probationary period. basically they can fire you (within reason ) of that probationary period at any time
  • Not sure what your new job is OP (congrats by the way) but as an HRM, my last job we had standard 3 months probation. However for some roles, especially "entry level" where there was a 3 month training period, it just didn't make sense to have people on a 3 month probation, as by the time 3 months was up they'd only just finished training. Hence some people had longer probations.
  • I think 3 months is pretty rare nowadays and 6 months is more standard.

Just for the record - you don't get full employment rights on things like unfair dismissal until you've been there a whole year. What should happen during your probation period (if you have a good practice employer) is that you get your performance monitored regularly, and support with any parts of the job you are having difficulties with. This doesn't regularly happen, though.

On the more positive side, it does cost quite a lot to recruit workers, so most employers want to support them to succeed in their jobs and pass their probationary period successfully :)
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • Thanks to you all for replying - seems as though 6 months in standard then.

    Cheers and thanks again.

Where I work it's six months with the option to extend that if you're not up to scratch to give you the chance to improve. I've only known one person be sacked in 13 years and that was after she was given many many chances to pull her socks up. There's quite afew people that should have been got rid of though.

PS Good luck settling in your new job!!!
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end
  • Like Janepig where I work its 6 months with the option to extend.

our standard is 6 months too.... a few people get put on a 3 month with option to extend but they are rather few and far between.
