Note: This is beta code and should not be used in a production environment or on a primary computer in the home. RC1 is intended for developers, IT professionals, and technology experts to continue or begin their testing of Windows Vista. Before you decide to use RC1, you should feel comfortable with installing operating systems, updating drivers, and general PC troubleshooting. Some risks of using beta operating systems include hardware and software incompatibility and system instability. If you have concerns about installing this beta software on your computer, we encourage you to obtain the final release version of Windows Vista when it is available in 2007.

I think this is really good for someone that is really good for someone who is a real expert in IT. Otherwise I would steer clear until the shrinkwrapped one comes out.

This is also a time limited software. It expires on June 1 2007. To continue using Vista after, you will have to buy the full version.

This version is really only a test version. It is not designed to replace your current copy of Windows.

Well that just proves that fools will buy anything.

    edit

I've just had a search on Ebay. I still think people are fools for paying around the £10 average that Vista is selling for there.

    A) It's free from MS
    B) It's not a finished version yet. It still has bugs in.

I got all excited then, but it seems from checking the website that to get the DVD it costs you over £6.00. No way am I spending several hours downloading it.

As will the finished version, if previous experience is anything to go by. ;)
  • i have been using the previous beta release and had no problems and if RC1 is better i feel happy using it. By the way, I dont like MS OS but need to use it for my job.

I agree with previous statements that this should only be for experienced users. It is M$ after all...
Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.
  • Sorry about this, I've done this before so I'm repeating myself a bit, but I really do need to make a comment here.

I find it hard to believe that it's starting already. People that haven't installed the beta are slagging it and making comments about it being bug filled because it's Microsoft.

This is a BETA people, it's not in a shippable state. Although, wide spread reviews have stated that any concerns about Vista's ability to meet it's shipping date are put to bed with this release. It is considered by many to be an excellent build. I can confirm this as I've been on the BETA program since way before it became public and this build is superb.

Issues do exist with detecting devices on some laptops and upgrading from previous BETA's can be a pain but this is really intended to be built on a fresh machine, i.e. not upgrading in any way for best effect and fewest issues.

On the issue on MS bashing and stability... stability is often down to poor maintenance of a machine. Even Unix, Linux, Netware, BeOS and any other OS I've ever used have issues when left unchecked or maintained. A software vendor cannot be held to task for all the 3rd software running on their OS. I've seen 3rd party software crash Linux many many times in the same way it does on Windows.

Personally, I've installed and managed thousands of Windows XP, 98 95, 3.1x and DOS builds and never experienced the issues that are reported widely in the press. The key word above has got to be MANAGED. With a good level of care comes a good OS.

    Anyhoo, rant over.

If you're after an excellent build BETA OS to see what the next gen is offering then I'd give it a try. On a seperate partition of your main machine (After all, what else do most of us do with the 250+GB Hard Disks we have in our machines!?) Installation is a breeze with about 1/5 the steps required to get Windows XP up and running.

If anyone would like assistance or a bit of guidance in using this build I'm happy to redirect to good resources online here in the forum or will help by eMail on an individual basis.

... and that's all I have to say about that.

Which is why most people wouldn't be advised to download it and install it on their PC, even if it's free.

Main issues I've heard about from people who've installed the beta are incompatibility with their current programs and drivers, and high memory usage.
