Refreshing colour on faded black coat

Hi All.
I really don't want to have to shell out on a new winter coat this year, especially as the one that i've had now for 5 years is still pretty serviceable (surprising really, as I got it from New Look!).
However, the black colour (cotton outer fabric) is pretty faded now and make the coat look a bit too shabby, even for me!
I know I could re-dye it, but I have been warned that when dyeing black, it can be tricky to get and even-looking take up of the dye.
Apart from learning to 'love' my now-grey parka and jazzing it up with colourful contrast scarves, does anyone have any ideas??
thanks all.

hi,
All I can suggest is try washing it in your machine first - if the coat comes out evenly wet and clean then I think that you should be OK dying it in your machine. Weigh the coat when it is dry and get packs of Dylon dye accordingly - and I'd add in an extra one for luck!! Then have a go - packs of dye are about £5 each so perhaps it might be cheaper to buy a new coat - up to you.
Also - check what the coat is made of - it it has any polyester in it - that won't dye. And you often find that although the fabric might be cotton - the stitching is polyester and so you get a top stitching look as this doesn't dye.

I have a pair of black jeans which I absolutely love but they fade to a greeny colour:eek:
I have used the dylon washing machine dye on them several times over the last couple of years and it has been very succesful. I think it's because I am dyeing them back to the original colour and not trying to make them a different colour IYSWIM
Good luck x:)Do more of what makes you happy:)0 -
thanks...you've given me confidence to try dyeing..I had forgotten that you can do it in teh washing machine. Is there anything I need to be aware of regarding using the washing machine next time around, following the dying ...eg for a white load! Don't want any more grey things!!0

If the quantities are all right (dye:salt:fabric), then you shouldn't have a problem - I've always done a load of something that doesn't matter if it picks up a bit of dye after though, so towels etc, just to pick up anything left over

I recently used the Dylon machine dye in black ( the one in a pouch) to dye some black linen trousers. It worked really well but I think the fabric needs to be 100% natural to get the best result( so cotton or linen)0

I often re-dye black items in the washing machine (goth-like teens:p) and find it very successful on the whole. It's worth doing a very hot empty wash after a dyeing session, and I tend to use a colour catcher for the first couple of loads after, too.[0

black dye always works a treat for me, id say give it a shot.It only takes a second to say 'Thanks, you just saved me a few quid!'
