Clearing My Debt & Improving my credit rating help

Hi
I have just returned home after living away at uni for 4 years. I have racked up debt with natwest credit card and barclaycard, as well as my hsbc overdraft. The three of these accounts have all been passed to a debt collection agency and are all bombarding me for repayments.
I understand these agencies can't actually obtain my money unless tehy take me to court and they are very unlikely to send debt collectors to my door.
Will these agencies ever give up and write off my debt?
I am starting work soon and would like to afford a morgage in the next 18 months, when will these debts come off my credit score and what can i do to improve it?
Thanks
H

The best way to improve your credit score , would be to pay off your debts , and have each one marked as settled.
You will have a default on your file for each debt pased to a debt collector , and this stays on your file for 6 years.
If Barclaycard and Natwest have enforceable CCA`s then they can take you to court and obtain a CCA against you
All in all , i see no reason they would `give up` and write off your debt , these companies are very persistent0
