Regularly contacted by employer on holiday...best course of action to take?

  • In the past I have had to fly home because of my job whilst being on holiday. I am unable to go into a lot of detail but it was within child protection. It was part of my job and duties and I knew I would only be called if needed. I had to take my work mobile/pager with me at all times but it was all part of my job.

I suggest that you are either not training candidates correctly or you are being too picky! Your job can not be so specialised that nobody else can do it or be trained adequately. I would also suggest head hunting for more suitable candidates or put test jobs up and see what repsonses you get etc.

It sounds to me like your husband has more of a problem with it than you do, so something needs to be done because either your job or marriage will suffer.

Given that they can't cope for 2 days without you - it is unlikely that they are going to sack you whatever you do.

Why don't you talk to them - explain the situation and see what comes of it.

Personally if I got myself to the stage that my employer was so desperate to have contact with me every day - I'd be asking for a pay rise at least!

Why not subtlely let it slip that you are looking for work elsewhere as you feel you need more holiday time (I'd be surprised if they don't come up with some sort of retention offer).

  • So what would they do if you were a) in a coma b) dead?

Sorry to be blunt but if these situations occured (gawd forbid) then the company would not collapse. They would have to cope. So basically you need to tell that they have to learn to cope without you.

  • If you loose clients the moment you go on holiday and not reply to emails/phonecalls you're worth more than 45k. Especially if you're working in London. About 10-20k more really.

Whenever I'm on annual leave and I'm called for work, i subtract the time from the amount of leave I put down in my weekly timesheet. I have my work phone redirect to my personal phone. Work do not have my personal number. Whenever I want to declare 'radio silence' I turn off the redirect.

I've also had 'stupid' phone calls.. like the time I was travelling home and got a phone call which resulted in me working 13hrs on a client's site, or I when I was at a family dinner and got a call at 7pm which lasted for 5 hours..

Maybe you need to structure your holiday to include some 'work hours'.. i know its a little sad, but if you plan for it, it may not stress you as much.
