Which gaming station ??

Looking to update my lads game station (currently a nintendo 64) for Christmas. Any view on the one to go for between the big 3. Also where to go for the best price?

Thanks

  • Sony's PS3 will be the best but won't be in the UK till easter time next year. If possible I'd wait till then as once all 3 are available, Sony will be the one with the most demand. Obviously it'll also be the most expensive, lol

If it's down to what will be available this xmas, I'd go for Xbox360 over the Nintendo Wii (Wii will be out this December, but limited stock). But thats only because it'll be cheap compared to the Nintendo Wii for games etc. It'll also have a lot more games available to choose from also.

You've probably seen on other posts that you can get a lot of cheap items for the xbox360 at the minute (do a quick search if you haven't seen them). Therefore you can get more for your money since it's not a brand new release.

I am a PC person myself as I find the games much better.

If you don't get many replies to this post, rename the title, to "PS3 or Wii or Xbox 360" as I wasn't sure what the post meant from the title as it didn't click that game station was referring to consoles, so others might overlook it as I almost did.

You might want to hint to your son on what consoles best. Make out it's for your friend's son and he doesn't have a console and she wanted to know what kids liked. This will give you an indication of his prefence as he'll probably want the same as his friends so that he can swap/borrow games.
  • You'll need a HD tv to get the best out of the 360 and the ps3.
  • Not true. While the HD experience is superior, it's gameplay that counts. And it still looks good on a standard-definition TV. Twenty years gaming, eight years in videogame journalism and five years in videogame retail has taught me that content is king.

For now, the PS2 is cheap and has a massive software library, as does the Game Cube. Both are on a par, technically. Xbox is technically a bit better and has similar games as the PS2. Xbox 360 is one generation ahead but costs more. Wii will be good value but will obviously have small list of games at launch. The controller is a unique(ish) motion-sensitive variant, although you can use a traditional pad, still. Other than that, wait for the PS3 in March but expect to pay £500 odd for a machine and a game.

From an N64, I'd got for the PS2 or Xbox for best value and obvious technical improvement. But the 360 will probably get a price-cut/better bundles toward Xmas. Depends on your budget, really.

One other thing to remember is your kid's taste. If he likes shooting, racing and sports, get a PS2 or Xbox (or 360). If he prefers quirkier and more unusual/cutesy titles, try Nintendo (Cube or Wii).
