Chinese Lanterns

In recent years for Christmas, I've bought a little something extra for all the family to enjoy on Christmas day on top of their individual presents (for example, last year I bought a giant cracker.)

This year I've decided to buy some chinese lanterns as I know none of us have ever seen any being set off and thought it would be a lovely way to end the day.

Has anyone got any suggestions where I might get some? I know I can get them online and I've found an eBay seller who will sell me 3 for just over £5 including postage. But how fragile are they? I don't fancy buying them online only to find RM have thrown the packet around and they've got damaged. So I was hoping to buy them from a shop, but the only place I've found them so far is Hawkin's Bazaar for £4 each, which is more than I wanted to pay.

I live in Manchester so I can get to a decent range of shops including Manchester city centre, Trafford Centre and Bolton and Bury town centres.

Thanks :)

  • Can I ask you to please reconsider this

When they land lit, they can be a fire hazzard. Lanterns that fall in fields are a huge danger to grazing cattle.
If you live in a costal area, they often get confused for emergency flares and cause false emergency call outs.

Yeah, they are really bad for the environment.

True. But thank you both for your opinions :) It's just something I'm considering.

I love it when local newspapers print stories of mysterious lights in the sky complete with blurry photographs. They always turn out to be Chinese lanterns.

The best place to buy them is in a firework shop then you know what you're getting. I looked up firework shops in Manchester on Google and found this one which has got a pretty comprehensive range of Chinese lanterns.

And if everybody else is going to be self righteous on this thread then so will I.

What about all those jet airliners constantly flying over our heads creating terrible pollution which probably harms cattle and burning up precious fossil fuels. Where will the coastguards be then when it all runs out? Think of the children etc.

They've been in the poundshop and 99p shop before as well as wilkinsons so it's just worth keeping your eyes peeled if you opt for them.

I did specifically say I didn't want to risk having them posted ;)

Thank you for suggestions everyone! I had another look round today and found some in The Works for 99p :)
