Hi - this may well be a question for Linda but shall ask everyone! This is my dress http://www.marklesley.co.uk/Mark-Lesley.html (go to style 3025 pg 49) I have got it from the shop and i was concerned when i went for my fitting (which consisted of them telling me i was wrong when i thought it was too tight and too long!) about the length as to me it seemed just a tad too long (yes i had the shoes i am wearing on at the time) they just kept saying "you need to practise wearing the dress (!!!) and dont look down whatever you do as u will fall over then! Which didnt help at all!!! I had already paid £85 for alterations which they said it would need before they had even ordered my size etc, but when i tried my actual dress on, they said it was fine (despite my worries) and instead of taking it up etc they just added a loop (to hitch the skirt up after photos etc etc) which even the lady in the shop admitted only takes them 30mins. So i feel a BIT cheated as they made me pay for alterations which were not actually done!

Anyway, When u look at that pic of the model in the dress, the skirt looks quite flouncy BUT it reality it isnt that poofy at all lol and i would really like to add a bit of shape to it.... not alot, just a bit.... and suddenly it dawned that maybe a petticoat would be an idea? As it would probably add the "flounce" i want lol and maybe lift the skirt a tiny bit which should make it fine.....??

Am i mad or would that work?? I am already paying another £100 to buy a lace bolero to cover my back and shoulders as despite telling the shop i was VERY uncomfortable having a strapless dress and due to the fact that the dress is a bit tight round the back of my shoulders and back i wanted to cover my fat lol.. but they said i didnt need anything and made me feel silly for asking to be honest and refused point blank to do any alterations as they said the dress was fine, so i am buying online :( So dont wanna spend MORE money on petticoat if it wont be any good!

And if so, where on earth could i get one at this short notice (i get married on 9th October this year)

What kind of petticoat would a dress this style need?? Oh by the way, wasnt thinking of a hooped petticoat... just a netty one if poss??

Thanks in advance and sorry for the little rant! :(

Surely if they aren't doing any alterations, they should refund you what you paid to have some done?!!

If not, ask them for some shoes, or a veil or a tiara, upto £85!

You can get petticoats on ebay and other online stores ~ I'd wait for linda though to tell you what kind of petti you would need x

    P.S. I LOVE your dress, it's beautiful!!

P.P.S I'm so glad the fitting went well, all that worrying over nothing hey lol!

i think mine's the opposite problem to you, I have paid for work on my dress that I didn't really think it needed but having never worn a wedding dress before I wasn't sure what it did or didn't need! mine is £22.50 to take some of the length off which it did need and £40 to add a bustle, she said I wouldn't manage a full day in the dress without a bustle but i think she was just trying to make some extra cash out of me!
  • have been mooching around on the Jupon website.... i reckon maybe style 163 or 168...?

Wow I think I am being overcharged for my alterations from reading what other people are paying. They want £75 to take it up and will quote me nearer the time if I want it taking in at the sides. I do want it fitting but I can't afford it! It fits well so I am scared to lose/gain any weight in the next year lol.
I would ask for a refund! They can't charge you for alterations you didn't have :O

"You need to practice wearing the dress" Well, ok you do kind of, but I tell my clients to remember you don't wear something like this everyday so you will need to adjust how you move in it.

"and dont look down whatever you do as u will fall over then!" Well, again yes this is kind of right (not very diplomatic in your shop lol) Stooping forward or looking down will cause the front of the gown to drop with your body. Looking down while you walk could make you trip on the hemline. You will only be walking this way while you make your journey up the aisle, after this point, you will automatically use your hands to lift your skirt. It'll be second nature. Head up, shoulders back and move slowly to meet your groom.

So, petticoats. 163 or a 168 may not give the lift you require. 163 is ideal for princess line and your gown is a little more than that. Personally I'd go for a 122. Obviously this is my opinion.

2 things I would most defo do. Try the gown on again with a 122 and GET YOUR ALTERATIONS MONEY BACK!!!! Threaten trading standards if you have to. "I had already paid £85 for alterations which they said it would need before they had even ordered my size etc" WHAT!!!!! How can they determine what work needs to be done??? Is that their standard shop policy?

My dress was just a tiny bit too long but I'm using a 2 hoop petticoat and its lifted it just the right amount. I was going to use a net petticoat but the price put me off a bit so I bought a used hooped petti off ebay and its fine. I also liked the idea of the hoops holding the dress away from my legs although i have to admit the net petticoats are much prettier...more romantic and less scaffolding :D

I can't help with length or price but don't forget to grab a pair of tights or something, I tried a petticoat on and it was pretty itchy on my legs
