Can anyone help me - can you declare your self bankrupt if you work for a local council?

I can't see why not. You'd need to check your contract though.The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter

My contract doesn't say specifically but it does say "your terms and conditions of employment are covered by the collective agreements negotiated and agreed by the National and Provincial Negotiating Committees as amended, withdrawn and/or supplemented by locally negotiated collective agreements determined by the council".0

Ermm.sounds like the usual complicated bull that councils put in contracts.
IMO your ok, but you could always call HR on Monday and ask them. You don;t have to give your name or details and it'll all be confidential.
At least it'll put your mind at rest.
