CSA nightmare - HELP!

Hi
My partner was made redundant in May this year.
He started paying CSA in October 2009 and cleared any backdate by January 2010 and paid regular weekly amounts until he left.
He started his new job at the end of May and we told CSA the new employer and earning etc. They have now got it sorted but said we owe £2,400 in arrears!!! How is this possible bearing in mind he has only missed 14 weeks payments.
We have wrote to the CSA to ask for their calculations as we weren't given anything. Any overtime he had in his previous job was very irregular and not much at all.
The only thing I can think of is that they have taken his earnings off of his P60 and calculated a full years laibility. I was told by the CSA that they only take payments from the first date of contact which would have been Sep / Oct 2009.
I'm very confused and very worried as they want to take over £400 a month which we cannot afford.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks

Ask for a clerical breakdown of how they reached this figure so that you can work out where it has come from.0
