ok i have just bought a lg gh22np20 dvd re-writer

ive currently have a 'nec dvd rw nd3500ag'.
basically, ive opened up my pc, the NEC is connected by 3 'plugs' one is a ribbon type the other is a 4 or 5 prong plug and the final is just a small white connector.
ok, ive basically just swapped the driver over, replaced the connectors and rebooted, the problem here is that my pc will not boot up, i get a message saying, system32/ntoskrnl.exe, im running windows xp home edition on this drive.
now i tried booting on another drive that i have which i do not use, this loads but there is no installation of the re-writer and when i click my computer there is no drive there.
ive checked the connections and everything seems ok, but will not load on my home edition, the other drive by the way is xp professional.
now ive just taken the rewriter out and put back in my old NEC which is not working properly. and my pc boots no problems and is reconised in my computer.
any ideas what is wrong here. why will my pc not boot when LG is swapped over. and why will in not install or be reconised. I presume its plug and play??

As it's an IDE based drive, it will have jumpers on it to select whether it is a master or slave. They are almost always shipped configured as "master". However, if the ribbon cable that it's connected to already has a master device on it, you will get a conflict.
Have you checked the jumpers on the old drive to see which it is set to, and changed (if necessary) the new one to be the same? There should be a diagram on the outer casing showing how to set the jumpers.0 -
Check the settings on the new drive are the same as the old one for master or slave, move the little jumper block to change.
edit-oops too late!0 -
i havent check anything, all i did was take the ribbon off the olf nec and put it onto the LG, if the 'jumpers' (prongs??) are different, would the ribbon still connect? All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0

I have had a quick look on the lg, there are 20 prongs along the top and 20 along the bottom, the 11th one is missing. this is where the ribbon connects to.All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0

This is about hard disks, but it shows someone setting a jumper:

my drive is slightly different to the one in that picture, where the guy is putting something in my lg does not have that section. All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0
