I have been stupid and complacant...

Options
I didn't bother to clean up my records post b/r, I very much regret this now. I was discharged on the 8th August 2008, had just had a baby and split from her father. 2 house move's later and still single, I cannot find my letter of discharge. I have just looked on Equifax and can see that a few of my lenders still have me as default with an outstanding balance.

Can anyone advise me the way forward? I can't even remember the account numbers I would need to contact them, or proof that I have been discharged :( What a stupid thing I have done, I would hate to think I am going to have bad credit for the rest of my life :(

You aren't stupid at all, and have done nothing wrong.

Just use the Equifax details to get the files cleaned up, as long as you do it before the 6 yrs of the bankruptcy being on your file, then you have lost nothing.

I got discharged 1.5yrs ago and still have 1 more to get taken off. :) I'm not too concerned though as I know it'll get done, and backdated to the date of the bankruptcy, then after 6 yrs it will drop off my records.

    Also, the discharge letter:

They don't issue you one automatically, they charge £60!

I just wrote to the official receiver and asked for a confirmation of my discharge, they sent a letter and I sent a copy of that out, worked fine, and cost nothing.

I couldn't even remember the oficial receiver I had, so I just phoned the Leeds office that I knew it was held at and they gave me my bankruptcy order number and then I wrote to them to request the discharge letter.

Don't beat yourself up, it sounds like you had a lot on your plate and it's nothing that can't be fixed now. Like GEEGEE8 said, you haven't lost the discharge letter they don't send one out, and you can get all the account numbers you need regarding your old accounts from Equifax or Experian, you are going to need to get a copy of your credit report from both anyway to see what needs cleaning up.

Once you have your credit reports, you can also write to the CRAs and ask them to query the accounts that haven't been updated for you. It does look better when they're satisfied, plus the older they get the less they're likely to affect credit scoring.

Thanks so much for replying, 1st thing 1st I will get a copy of the discharge letter then write to the creditors - I think it's only 3. I am so glad all is not lost, I don't want credit at all I have learnt my lesson well :A
  • I have a related question. I wrote to HSBC with my discharge letter (with court stamp). They have got back to me stating that I should provide a copy of Certificate of Discharge.

I am not sure as to what is Certificate of Discharge -
Will a copy of discharge letter sent out by the OR not be sufficient?

The letter was sufficient for all of my creditors, and most of them were banks.

The certificate is something you have to request and costs £60.

Seems a bit unfair that they will not accept your letter. Otherwise, get the OR to write to them again.

Nope, nothing lost :) in fact, you are doing at a time that most people probably would. It all gets changed back to the date of your bankruptcy, so you don't need to worry when you actually tackle it all.

There is a thread on the Bankruptcy forum with useful addresses I think, you could get the address for your creditors from there. Or just google it.

Barclays messed me about a lot, and would not change anything or communicate with me. I wrote them the complaint letter in the bankruptcy forum giving them 28days to amend the details or I would make a formal complaint to a certain body.

It worked and they deleted my whole record with them within about 20 days. Might be worth a try. Attach your letter to that, and see if they get on with it instead of stalling you.
