I really think you are missing the point completely.
No - the point is taken. However it has given many unscrupulous companies the chance to ‘jump on the bandwagon’ and scam the public by exploiting their desire to be environmentally responsible.
The ecotivity website is does not intentionally or knowingly promote unscrupulous companies.
The idea of the post was to offer a free service to green companies to add details of their green products. - I think that the point of the original post has been missed! Any how - on the ecotivity website, products that are listed with editorial have an ecotivity rating - voted for by users of the website - if you see something in the editorial that you think should have a low green or ethical rating - cast your vote!
If you want to discuss companies promoting unscrupulous companies - there are some bigger fish out.0 -

Readers(users) allowed to post ecotivity rating? - that must be about the least objective method known to man.
What is to stop employees entering multiple ratings? Anyway user satisfaction surveys are notorious for producing unreliable data simply because people are unwilling to admit that what they have bought isn't very good.
A Typical example is for devices that claim to reduce fuel consumption on cars by 30%. These devices have been indepentantly tested and shown to be absolute rubbish(and even increase consumption) and yet loads of people claim they work simply because they won't admit they have been conned.
With regard to editorial content. You list Windsave a wind turbine generator. Have you looked at the link? Full of carefully worded and carefully qualified claims. Plenty of evidence on the web that there is no way it will meet its claims for the average user.
I could argue long and hard about that product but that is not the point. You have given it your editorial endorsement, so what checks or tests have you done on that company and their claims for their product? All I can see is you have a sentence or so repeating Windsave's claims and a link to their website.
If you allow Google to throw up links for any dubious firm onto your site(I am assuming it is your site?) you are compromised. It is hardly a defence to argue that there are companies out there who are even more culpable.0 -
Sorry this is simply not good enough.
Not even a small step in the right direction??
Fair enough – I agree that some companies are producing green products and may make big claims about how green they are – those that are telling lies need to be reported to Trading Standards. There probably isn’t a green product of service out there that does not have a negative impact on the environment – bio diesel fumes still cause asthma but it is still better that burning petrol. Organic cotton t-shirts still get shipped half-way round the world, carbon off-setting has it’s flaws etc.
Cardew - The feedback is appreciated, we will try to take as much as we can onboard:
Rating system flawed? – We will be also adding a comments section for each article – as soon as we can code this.
Google ads evil – we will get alternative sponsorship as soon as we can.
Thanks.:D0 -

Thanks for a considered reply.
By 'not good enough' I meant the post and not your site.
A search on the internet will reveal almost every Trading Standards Office have issued warnings, and there are thousands of complaints, and hundreds of court cases, pending against alternative energy firms.
The problem is that firms use terms like 'savings up to £x' and 'in the region of' with other caveats that make it very difficult to pin them down.
It will be very difficult to stop your site being exploited by firms out to make a quick buck.0 -

Who else is up for a court appearance Cardew? I only know of Simplee Solar going to court and complaints against Solar Tecnik and Smart Energy (yet to be upheld, but I imagine they will go the same way as Simplee Solar). It would be interesting to know who else is out there acting like Simplee Solar0 -
just added to the ecotivity website: Solar water heating systems - give pushy salesmen the push
Hope this helps.0 -
