Halfords 'Classic' engine oil

We recently bought a 27 year old Land Rover which runs fine but is certainly not a fine tuned automobile. Consequentially we are not going to spend £10 a litre on Mobil 1 so we just want the cheap 20/50 basic engine oil.
Popped into Halfords where the only 20/50 oil they had was called 'Classic Car' oil and was very nicely packed in an old style metal can and was priced at £13 for 5 litres!!!
Anyway, went into Wilko's and they have 20/50 for £3.25 for 4.5 litres
Halfords the rip-off merchants are charging nearly 4 times the price just so you can have it in a nice tin.

If you are prepared to look around some Motor Factors and shops like Motor World stock Duckams "Q" 20W/50 which could well be better for your Landrover engine than the cheap Wilko's stuff. A lot of this cheap stuff is recycled oil, so beware. I'm sure Duckham's will have a website, I think they are now part of Castrol, where you could maybe contact them for you nearest stockist. Castrol also make a "Classic" oil which is a similar price to that at Halfords. Ducham's is around £9 for 4.5 litre.
I have no connection with either Castrol or Duckhams it's just that my local motor cmponents shop sell the Duckhams and I use it in my Morris Minors.0 -
Maybe not owned by Castrol? http://www.minifinity.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=printview&t=24894&start=0
However, the Duckhams Q containers display Castrol's address - Wakefield House, Piper's Way, Swindon.0 -
The Duckhams brand is owned by Castrol. It is not supplied to major retailers, just independants and small chains.
The Halfords Classic is a quality oil with additives suitable for classic cars. Much the same as castrol Classic.0 -
Just because they are both the same 'grade' (20/50) doesn't mean they are the same oil. Usually the more you pay the higher quality the oil will be.
If you do not mind spending £'s on engine repairs in the future buy a cheap oil.0 -
Why do you consider Halfords to be rip-off merchants? They are offering a product at a price. If it is available elsewhere cheaper then fine, but Halfords are still entitled to sell it at whatever price they want. They aren't ripping anyone off.
Also is the product in Wilkos is of the same quality as Halfords oil? I would suspect not.0 -

Dad has one and just fitted a new carb for the first time in 20-years.
I love it when people talk to you like you know nothing about motor vehicles.
It needs a new carb after 20 years??? My 1963 Lotus Elan is still on it's original carb. Go figure.
But then again, what do I know.0 -

Halfords pretty much market themselves as a one stop shop for your motoring needs, therefore it would not be an unreasonable assumption that Halfords stock a full range of motoring products.
Independants and stores such as Wilkos sell 5l/4.5l of engine oil for under £5 but the cheapest Halfords sell is £12... why is that???
I would suggest that it is because if they stocked the cheap/basic oil then it would decimate the sales of their current stock and consequentially lose them profit.
They should be condemned on two counts...
1. Insulting their customers by not offering a proper range (and allowing the customer to make their choice)
2. Relying on customer lack of knowledge and/or apathy to sell an over-priced productBetter to die on your feet than to live on your knees!0 -
But if they sold the cheap oil and people found it was ruining their cars, would they go for the more expensive same brand oil..im sure they would take their custom elsewhere insteadSmile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0

you obviously know nothing about halfords!! They buy the cheapest rubbish then repackage it in their packaging and sell it on for crazy money... believe me I have worked for Halfords for years and know the tricks they play! You are buying the lowest quality crap possible when you buy a halfords branded product...0 -
