Has anyone been on this before and can offer an opinion as to whether it is a recommended thing to do when visiting the area?

Consider using the ordinary train service from Fort William to Mallaig. It uses the same line, though obviously it isn't a steam train.
As far as travel from Inverness is concerned, there is a bus service. I don't have info, but look up the details on https://www.traveline.org.uk (you'll also get the train info there).0 -
the steam train is good but more expesive than the ordinary train to go along exactly the same route with the same scenery of the Glenfinnan viaduct, for more info see http://www.westcoastrailways.co.uk
it depends how much you want the Harry Potter experience, if you have kids they probably want the Jacobite but if you just want the trip the normal train will do, I have made this many times and it has beautiful views on a nice day. Booking in advance is always recommended as the service is busy at this time of year, for more info see http://www.scotrail.co.uk or call 08457 55 00 33 to check availability and prices.
hope this helps x0 -
I did the Jacobite trip and would thoroughly recommend it. Book well in advance the steam train is very popular. There is not much to do in Malaig.
You might want to do the steam train from Aviemore to Broomhill. We booked for the cream tea in first class. http://www.strathspeyrailway.net/"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Glenfinnan is the Place to go! My heart is still there.
Small village surrounded by beautiful mounties. Amazing loch Shiel and the Valley. It's just 30 minutes away from Fort William by rail. just Google it and check the pictures.0 -
Steam train is great, the view of Loch Shiel and going over the Glenfinnan viaduct is brilliant (although blink and you'll miss it)
When you get back to Fort William take your car and go back to Loch Shiel it's amazing, probably my favourite spot in Scotland!0 -
