Hi all
I'm new to all this like all of you would have been at some stage. I have realised I am broke and debt and realised a while ago, but have spent months just staring at this forum and not actually doing anything. Anyway i have now decided to put all the bad stuff in the past and move on in life and this means sorting out my finances.
Anyway to the point i have looked at what I'm paying out for and have decided that the expensive £70 a month central london gym membership is a complete waste of money as don't really use it.
Anyway the point is is that i only started the 12 month membership about 3 months ago. It was kind of one of those impulse things when my wife left.
Does anyone know if i stand any chance of getting out of this contact or have i just got to accept it and take it on the chin that i will be paying it for another 9 months. Has anyone successfully managed to get out of one of these contracts before?

Hi, the best thing you can do is write to them and explain that you can't afford the membership. You may be able to negotiate instant termination or a shorter contract. BUT you have signed up for 12 months and legally they can enforce that.
Well done for facing up to your situation. It isnt easy but one of your first lessons needs to be that you need to budget properly before making long term financial commitments, but I guess you've figured that out already.
Anyway, post an SOA on here (sticky at top of forum) and we'll see what we can do to help you cut down and sort out those debts.
Well done for posting and keep smiling,I'm a qualified accountant but please make sure you get expert advice as any opinion is made in a private capacity.

If you can't get out of it, and you are forced to severely budget elsewhere, it may be useful to keep it and use it! If for example you would go to the pub instead a few times a month and spend more, it may be a good excuse.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. They will not let you out of your contract , make sure you cancell your direct debit when the contract ends , double check the terms and conditions , make sure it wont roll over into another 12 months .Hi all

I very much doubt they will allow you to terminate the contract, whether you can or can't afford it. I really struggled with mine years ago which was £12 a month, unfortunately I still had to keep paying it. The only reasons they would accept as not being able to continue was if you had moved/lived a certain amount of miles away.
When I had mine, I had got into a few months arrears and it was threatened with DCA's, they still demanded the full amount from me for the whole of the contract.
They are very tricky to deal with, like mobile contracts etc..
I am not sure if these kind of things have changed though since my problem with my membership, I hope so.
I hope you can get something sorted, but I doubt there is anything that can be done.0 -
Well I've written to them requesting they let me out of the contract, whats the worst they can do- say no. If you don't ask you won't get.
Also finally cut up all my credit cards and then requested two old bank accounts to be closed, as never used. So should get the outstanding amount from those back, which is only about £6 but then thats £6 that can be paid off the credit cards0
