    Buy them on the XC train from the conductor. You'll need to buy any fares to and from Glasgow Central separately as they are operator-specific and don't combine with any connecting fare.

    The problem being getting onto the platform and train minus a ticket as early morning 6-9am Scotrail can have Central manned with folk checking tickets before you get onto/off the platform. They may miss out XC platforms, if it is low down near a Virgin service plat 1 or 2 but as other local services use others it is luck-esp if like some services (Transpennine) and they go into 8 or 9.
