Work asking more of me

I have worked for a company for a number of years I used to work flexible hours but after having a short time off I went back under a new contract which I had to sign if I wanted to go back to work. My hours went from flexible to very rigid.
My work has changed. Now I have been told one day a week I have to change my work location I will have an hour each way travel which will be in my own time. On my contract it does say they can ask me to go anywhere.
I have told them I can't do it but they have insinuated that my husband should take that day off for childcare and also they would have to look at how the office work from now on, which sounds like a threat to me (maybe Im being touchy).
Now they are not replying to my emails which are work related.
I don't really know how to react to the situation.

There really isn't anything you can do. You have signed a contract and have therefore agreed to the job as it stands. Sorry, but on this basis, the job is what it is.

I think that was more of a suggestion as to why the OP can do the job
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

4 people on the ignore list....Bliss!

yes i see what you mean,

    thanks,
  • To be honest, in the current environment, most employees being asked to go above and beyond normal job roles. Businesses have had to toughen up to survive, not that I'm saying this is fair!

It sounds harsh, and in no way am i trying to be, but I guess its a decision of how much do you want the job? How old are the children, would it be worth looking into a nursery/childminder? Weigh up the pros and cons of the job, and make a decision whether to start looking for another?

Sorry, not much help i know.

Hi No, that has been a great help the job has changed beyond all recognition. And I now know that I no longer want to do the job and I should have never have gone back. I have started to look for other jobs.

I don't mind doing extra for the company if I get something in return. With child care and travel I would have been losing in the region of £50 a week which is around 30% of my wages so it's really not worth staying.

Thanks for all your replies decision made :)

Why signed to work elsewhere if you can't?

Ultimately the employer has needs and if you can't meet them then they need to consider how these needs can be met even if that involves you being displaced.

I was told if I didn't sign I couldn't go back to work. And to be honest we all have things in our contract that never actually materialize.
And I occasionally have to travel which is fine but this would now be once a week sometimes twice. And I work close to home atm the mo this would mean I'd have to travel an 80 round trip.
