I bought a photo CD from a family photographer.
i suggested i may get them printed when i met him later...he responded...
I was advised that you will be taking our photos to have printed into
an album. I must highlight this as being illegal as the
copyright is with the photographer and unless given permission, any
reproduction without permission would be an infringement of copyright.
is this true?

You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
Question is, did you commission the photographer in the first place?, if so, did you read the small print?.Never Knowingly Understood.

just an mutual agreement was made to take photos, then they gave us a receipt for photo cd0

Who holds the copyright over the photos on the CD? The photographer?0
-
If there is no written agreement otherwise then the photographer automatically retains copyright of any photographs they have taken. That's the default position. The photographer has to give up or vary those rights.0

I think you'll find the images are either low-res or possibly watermarked and so will not be suitable for printing yourself. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Interesting article that dogmaryxx
Generally speaking, unless you have paid a commission for copyright ownership of the photos. Then the copyright is retained by the person who originally took the pictures. So you need to ask for permission to reproduce the photos. As long as you state that's it not for profit and mainly personal it shouldn't really matter. Some photographers are pretty anal about others using their photos without permission however.Owner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

i thought the whole point of buying photos on a CD, was so you could print them off yourself. why else would you have it otherwise?
with all the photographers in my area, you have the option to pay to have them printed, or buy the CD, none have ever said you cant print from the CD, its for viewing only

At the end of the day, when they sell the CD, they lose control of the photos anyway;)
