head scar and hair dye???

Hi All,

I had a nasty head wound from a car accident on the 30th July...

The staples have been removed and the wound has closed nicely - but of course the scar is very fresh.

How long would you think I should leave it before I can dye my hair???

Would hate to cause the wound any trouble by doing it too early - I use a black home dye if that makes a diff???

Thanks all..

Just to get an idea, where is the scar? Is it in the hairy bit (technical eh?) or forehead, nape of neck etc. Could you cover the scar with a waterproof plaster/vaseline etc?

If you are really desperate to sort out your roots could you get a friend to help? Ask them to see if they would manage to paint some vaseline on the scar and then use a brush to carefully paint the dye on the hair around it? If they feel they'd not manage that then you might have to wait for a bit as it's only been 2 weeks and the scar might sting a lot.
If it's just the roots you need to sort out could you mix a small amount of the dye and just paint it on the obvious bits - front, parting etc? and leave the full head for a few weeks.

    thanks for the reply :)

luckily - it's not desperate - I'm just very bored at home recovering and there's a dye here calling my name...

I'll leave it a few more weeks I think let it all calm down

    Thanks again

No problem, I am no expert of this kind of thing, but I do know any cuts sting when you get dye on them ;).
Were you told about covering your head/protecting the scar in the sun?
DS2 cut his hand badly while on holiday and once the stitches came out we were told to be very careful about using sunblock/covering the scar until it "toughened up"(I may be wrong, but I'm sure it was an increased chance of skin cancer for the new scar tissue, anyway the scar has no melanin for protection so a hat might be an idea :)).

wierdly enough no one has said anything about it - they took the staples out and there was no after care advise except don't rub it too much when you wash ur hair???

Oh well... just ordered a sequin beret from ebay - looks like it'll be getting lots of use :)

Wait till it is completely healed.

fwiw if it's not on the crown of your head you could get a friend to paint the dye on your hair and not touch the bit with the scar - the roots won't show because it's not on the crown of your head.;)

Know its not an answer to your question, but have you tried calling your GP to ask? I'd say NHS Direct too but your GP has more likely seen the scar since.

I have several large scars and to be honest I could not take dye for at least a year after it happened, I tried and it left me in tears each time.
I have a couple on my face as well and even the smell would set them off itching.

Even now many many years later they might still kick off.

To be honest only you will know when you can try it and if it hurts make sure rather then trying to put up with it you wash it off. The above advice is very good though, talk to your GP

    Awww Gothicfairy...

thank you for sharing your actual exp with me...

hmm... I will defo leave it for a much longer healing period, and might have to skip the home do all together.

Will be making appt with GP for next week to discuss some other accident related issues and will bring up the subject of scar after care.

Luckily I've got dark brown hair I just prefer it black... and again luckily I don't seem to have any visable line where the dye stops and my natural colour begins???

might have to get used to what nature gave me for a while, :A

Thanks again for all of your replies - looks like face packs and the such like will have to temper my boredom :)

    xx
