Tin (?) sink tarnished - any ideas?

We brought a silver coloured metal sink (I suspect tin or similar) back from Morocco when we were over at Christmas.
It was all plumbed in yesterday and has only been used once or twice but is starting to tarnish very slightly already. It's a fairly dark rust colour (although I've seen enough rust in my time to know it isn't actually rust).
Any ideas on what it could be, how we can clean it off and how to prevent it in future?
We were thinking of putting a light layer of wax over the sink to offer some protection.
Thanks in advance.

Hi naturals, best thing to clean any metal I've found is Autosol metal polish, gets rid of most stains and marks. You find it in a small tube in the motoring section.Failing that good old Brasso for silver.
Hope something works!Debt at highest £102k

Thanks for the tip. I'll try this.
It really is the most stunning sink ever. It only cost me £20 and having rebuilt half the bathroom around it I'd hate to have to take it out and swap it for a boring enamel one.0 -
Anyone have any ideas on how to protect the sink btw?0

Once you've cleaned it, would you be able to paint over it with a clear lacquer? Otherwise, baby oil might do the trick.0

Hi Naturals ,
I don't know whether you've heard of them but...
STARDROPS!!!!;)
Neat on a non-scratch sponge & plenty of elbow grease and you'll be dazzled by the shine! it really is a miracle product - there are quite a few Stardrop Worshippers on this site.
Hey... I've done so many recommendations, I should be on commission!

Yeah, I could paint over it with lacquer. Any suggestions on where I could get some that can be painted onto metal?0

I've got some stardrops and it's come up lurvely.
Stupid question but is there any difference between varnish and laquer? I tried B&Q but couldn't see a product that'd fit the bill.
Thanks again.0 -
Just to update this thread - I ended up buying a can of Plasticote clear spray. It's designed for protecting stuff sprayed with their paints but it worked a treat.0
