A Little Question Please?

Hi Folks

I wonder if anyone could advise me on this one.

I've been working part time for the past 1.5 years, just 18 hours per week - gross pay = £497 per month. My tax code for that was 647L.

Back in May, I started working a second job, which is just bank work, so I'm only needed now and then, it's not regular hours.

I've just been sent two PAYE Coding Notices.

For my first part time job, they've now given me 495L, instead of 647L and for the bank job, they've given me 152T.

I've noticed a huge chunk of tax has been taken off on my payslip for the end of this coming month.

Does this mean that I'm going to be worse off by working a second job from now on?

Thanks,

Sal

Perfectly normal... they have split your allowance between the two...

    Eg 495 + 152 = 647

However, as you dont earn more than £6475 (£497 x 12 = 5964) in your first job it makes sense to split it this way.

Your second job will start your tax lower, eg £1520.

    Hope that makes sense...

You're still (as previous post) getting the full allowance - but split. And HMRC don't normally do that unless you request it? As only you know the beneficial split according to the expectation from each of the jobs.

The current split would be better as 597 (part time) and 50 (Bank)? As there is a risk, if your Bank job doesn't yield more than £1520 gross, in this year, of overpaying tax against the part time job (£5964 gross?). Which means you will need to reclaim after April.

Better, I would have thought, to cover the part time job in full ..... as on the split above.

You will need to look out for your two P60s, these are your receipts for the tax deducted under PAYE and you should receive them before the end of May. If you have NOT paid tax in both jobs then you will be due a refund unless your bank job has paid you exactly £1520.
The only thing that is constant is change.

This mystifies me, if you have not paid tax in both jobs, then where is the refund due from?

I think 'NOT paid tax in both jobs' - is not the same as 'NOT paid tax in either job'? :p
