Weekend work for nearly 16 yr old

My daughter is 16 at the end of January and is keen to get some weekend work. She was hoping to get some Xmas temp work as a way of getting some experience in retail but will do anything within reason! Does anyone know if any of the big retailers would employ her before her 16th birthday? She got in touch with the people who send her NI card and they said she does not need an NI Number until she is 16 but can work without it. She has worked voluntarily for a local nursery but this is the only work experience she has.
Any suggestions anyone??
Thanks
Sandra

I was working in sainsbury's at 15 - they'll be looking for xmas temps pretty soon, if not already.
  • My DD has just landed herself a christmas job at TKMaxx ( shes 16)..prior to her birthday she enquired for numerous jobs but no one would take her without her NI no.The only places that would ..places like cafes etc did not have anything for her.
Im sure that if she had some voluntary experience on her CV that would be advantageous when her NI no comes through.
I know 15 year olds can work in certain places but the hours are resticted. Hope she gets some luck soon .:)
    £900 towards next holiday...ta very much Mr T x

When her 16th birthday is, is actually irrelevant.

Most big employers are not allowed to employ young people until they have left education. Some will but very rarely for Christmas temps, more likely around May/June when their education is only a factor for a couple of months.

They have strict working hours of 2 hours per school day, 5 on a Saturday and 3/4 on a Sunday (Sunday rules keep changing). So make sure she stays within the law. Oh, and gets at least £3.10 per hour from October

  • As previous poster has said Sainsburys do employ 15 year olds (15 and three months I think) The rules are very strict until after school leaving age ie 2 hours only when they have school the next day, but this does mean they can do 8 on a Saturday.
