£40 default(British gas) affects future mortgage?

Hello there

Just found out from my credit report that british gas has placed a default on my credit report without informing me. I am in the process of collecting the complete information regarding this.

In the mean time, can you please help me to understand how this will affect my standing for a first time Mortgage?

Really worried.

Thanks

It may well make life very difficult, especially if you have a relatively small deposit.

Get saving hard and see a reputable local broker.
  • Hi

We had a similar thing, but we received a phonecall on Monday morning to say that British Gas are removing the default notice. Hurrah!

But OP is right, a default is a bad, bad thing to have on a credit file. If it shouldn't be there, complain to British Gas.

Thank you for your comments. i am seeking help from citizens advice on how to handle this.

In the mean time, can you please advice me on how this deafult will affect my mortgage prospects. My family income is 50K/annum.

I am surprised that i was offered by Halifax a credit card with 4k limit, last week which i actually accepted.

    Thanks

When you say local broker, are you referring to guys who work for these big banks or these are individuals who work independently? How do i find them?

If they work for lenders they are sales people (possibly advisors if they offer advice) but will be tied to that lender, brokers, will have access to either a defined panel, or whole of market, depending on status.
