Agencies

  • there might not be the job that they are advertising for - or the company might want someone whose had their license for xx years.

Driving agencies are the same - some companies wont take anyone who has points - or havent had their licence for 5 years. They can be picky about it. I've known a company to ask someone to leave site because they didnt like the way they was dressed (girl = ridiculously high heels = penguin walk!)

Chances are they are trying to build up their books and are placing "jobs" to get candidates

Fair enough but they could at least contact the people on their list who have the right qualifications for jobs coming in to see if they want to be considered AS WELL AS placing an ad to get more applicants!! I think once they register you they never look at you again unless you contact them!!

  • i think you misunderstood what i put.

    There (probably) ISNT a job

The Advert will be a (pretend) job to get people to register

They WONT contact your husband unless there is an actual job - the adverts you are seeing are probably dummy ones because they dont have any candidates on their books apart from a few people

(PLUS is other compaies are seeing that they are advertising for FLT drivers then they will more than likely ring the agency knowing they have FLT drivers on their books)
  • the easiest way to spot these "jobs" is in the detailing. if its vague (example: "x5 HGV1 drivers needed to local distribution company. £8ph days, call 00000000) then chances are its fake. If its more detailed then its probably for a company and is legit.

It also depends on the area - Construction is REALLY struggling as you are aware so he might be better off opening up and doing other things - Does he have a drivers licence? Can he do van driving for an agency? warehouse work? office work?

Someone said earlier it's an offence to advertise a job that does not exist - can they really continue doing this so blatently!! He is trying to add strings to his bow - has been a self employed bricklayer for 30+ years and always driven all kinds of plant - now you need a ticket for each machine he shelled out over £650 to get his telescopic ticket (as this was the one which seemed to be in demand) but of course now everyone wants crawler cranes or dumpers!! Far too dear to put himself through license for all possible machines (crane ticket over £1000) but is considering doing HGV license - I'm not sure if it's worth it as all the driving jobs I've seen want experience too!! He's 51 what the hell is he supposed to do???

It is illegal for them to advertise non-existant jobs but proving they've done it is rather difficult.

Most driving companies would like someone who has been driving over 5 years as its easier for insurance purposes but that doesnt mean they wont take on your OH. I know for a fact that in our area trying to place a telescopic worker is difficult as it is a specific area. Hopefully the down turn in economy will turn itself around but i realise you can not wait for this. What about going back to college as an adult learner and picking up another trade? If he is out of work then the job centre can assist in paying for courses.

Sometimes hassling local companies yourself works - Get him a C.V up and start emailing it around, in essence, your cutting out the middleman (recruitment agencies) (i know you've probably tried this but persistance is the key)

I have had the same thing, jobs listed but when I apply they don't really have them yet. The last couple of days the agencies have actually called me asking how I am finding the job market and what is avalible out there. I am sure they are hoping I will give them a list of companies I have applied to or found are looking for staff.
Even worse though is the places like Vertex who offer you a an interview which you go to and pass, they say you have the job but as yet there is no start date, but for sure you have a job with them etc etc 3 months later still no job or emails/ calls.

I have noticed this act of deception has been prolific where I am looking, it is so annoying as it is a waste of my time. I think it is time something was done about it also.

Some of the better all round job sites do allow you to filter these leeches out of your job searches!

I have the opposite problem , agencies constantly ringing to offer me staff , its not so much them ringing to see if we need anyone that annoys me , its more the fact they tell me what i want !, drives me mad

Thanks to everyone for the replies - it's just nice to know the problem is more widespread than I thought and it's not something I should get so wound up about!!! Can't help it tho - especially as almost every job on recruitment websites seems to be through an agency - now just have to work out a way to sift through the 'pretend' jobs to find any real ones out there...!
