Help... advice needed please

Hi Everyone,

I am currently on a DMP so therefore have zero funds and my L reg car has given up the ghost. I need a car to get to work, public transport not possible from where I live to get to work ahhhhhh!!!

Any ideas as to how on earth I could get a car, family or friends loaning me the money is not an option, I fear I am in serious trouble with this and could cry.

How far is it? Have you any colleagues who could give you a lift even part of the way?
  • I am teacher and work way out of the area of the school so unfortunately car sharing not an option. To get public transport to my nearest colleague would require 3 buses and they don't earlier enough to get me to their house in order for us to then be at school by 7.30am.

    Its a nightmare
  • second hand cars are available for a few hundred quid; it might just take a month of determined veggieness and scrimping (I guess you've got a month 'til the end of the school holidays). Check freecycle and gumtree too.

Can you get an emergency loan or advance of salary from your employer?

  • Thank you for your advice. Emergency loan not possible and I really don't want to buy a car for a few hundred because I am buying an old car that will no doubt be a money pit.

I just feel so depressed with it all.

Not sure whereabouts you are based but both in my current area and where I used to live you can get hopper buses specifically for workers where you book them in advance and they drop you off at places that aren't generally on the main bus routes, could be worth checking if they do anything similar in your area.
  • Thank you for that idea, but unfortunately they are not in my area.
  • Hi Venus,

I'm almost out of ideas if you don't want a cheap car and lifts and public transport aren't possible. I guess you could try moving closer permanently but moving isnt free. Could you house share with a colleague for a bit in the week or do you have family to look after at home? Can you cycle to work?

If you put up an SOA we might be able to advise where you can save money to save up for a new car but in a month you won't get more than a cheap one.

The one thing I can't recommend but I guess sounds tempting for you is getting in more debt to get a decent car. Resist!! If you're already on a DMP it's probably not an option anyway and its not like you can work from home so I guess you're going to get creative in your thinking. By the way how terminal is the car? Can you really not get it fixed?

And could you do some tutoring, marking, anything for extra income in the next month to get some extra money?

    Keep smiling

You can get a decent car for 350 - 400 squid that would see you through.
