Christmas Temp Jobs?

Hi all,

I am looking to get a Christmas job working evenings/nights and thought it would be useful if anyone has any information to post it here?

Do you know when stores start hiring? How do they advertise? What shifts they offer? How much they pay? etc...

Thanks!

    Hi Donna,

Usually they start hiring around September/October. Our JobCentre had an ad for Father Christmas/Grotto Elves in last week, so you're not too early.

Does your local shopping centre have a jobs board? Keep an eye on that, also notices in windows of smaller stores.

Otherwise googling "name of store" + jobs will bring up their recruitment pages. If they've nothing in yet, I suggest bookmarking the site and visiting every day.

Many of the larger stores now if you ask instore will tell you to apply online.

    Hope that helps. :)

ETA - usually pay is a bit above the minimum wage. Variety of shifts, you'll be expected to work weekends and possibly Thursday/Friday evenings during the busy few weeks before Christmas.

Debenhams are already recruiting so worth checking larger stores websites.

Do a CV drop aswell, take one round to local stores and ask if they will be recruiting for Christmas temps and see if you can leave a CV with them. Some stores may give you an application form to take away with you. I got my first ever job by asking round in shops so worth doing.

Make sure you put a covering letter with your CV just stating things like what your doing at the moment, skills you have and when you're available to work. Don't make this really long it's just a brief overview of you.

  • Hi Donna,

I know that some Tesco's have started advertising their run up to christmas jobs. The one i work in allways fills its position early.
Also if you can do the evening shifts they pay much better.

Good luck with your job hunting.

I got a Christmas temp job by doing as Kate says, bookmarking loads of retailer recruitment pages and then checking back every day.

This is probably obvious but most retailers will expect you to work Christmas Eve, possibly Boxing Day and NY Eve/NY Day. You'll be spending most of Christmas working, but it is a really good money boost.

I shall be watching this thread with interest.

Does anyone know which stores pay a bonus at the end of the temporary xmas contract?

When I had a christmas job a few years ago, at Game, I applied in August to there and a few other stores...and that was late apparently lol...started at Game in September, so you'll need to be quick! Most would be minimum wage I would imagine, at Game they hired about 4 of us, and we were given whatever shifts were spare....the worst ones didn't get offered many shifts, so the decent person got the most shifts...me lol as I actually turned up pmsl!
