What's your mortgage free dream?

Options
Here's my story...... We currently have 19 years left on our mortgage. I am 26 and my husband has just turned 30. We live in a modest 2 bedroomed terraced house and we only plan on having the one child so it is totally adequate for what we need. I currently work part time and have just been given a promotion, so hopefully over the next couple of years if I work hard enough I could be earning a decent amount of money. This new direction in career got me thinking about whether we would move when I was earning more money. However, it has always been our dream to move to the country and live the 'good life' and be self sufficent (I currently have an allotment and I really enjoy growing my own veggies). If instead we stayed in our current house (only got a 70k mortgage on it) concentrated on uping our payments instead of moving, maybe we could have it paid off in 10 years time. As I would only be 36 this would give us chance to build a bit of savings and live our dream.

What are you dreams you would like to fulfil when you are mortgage free?

  • To stop worrying about the bills, the child care costs (including uni ??) and then start travelling!!!!

To get back with my OH to where we were 20 years ago - just the two of us !!!!!!!!
  • To build our investments to the point where we can live off the income & be totally free to spend all our time doing what we want to do, regardless of whether it pays or not!

    I'm nearly 33. DH nearly 34.
My plan/dream is to be mortgage free by the time I am 40. Buy a two seater sports car each and start saving. Then by the time I am 43 our youngest will be 18 and so we want to start travelling.....

Travel the world if possible. Maybe buy a place in Spain or France wherever it is warm and close to the sea with a little bit of land, so after travelling the world I could relax somewhere warm in winter.

Old age isn't bad when you consider the alternative.
  • Like a couple of the others, go travelling with my OH. Do what we should have done before we had DD :D

Im a single mum, very aware that although i work, im in quite a low paid job and once my DS and DD leave school, my money will go down futher (WTC and CTC) so im trying to pay my mortgage off, so the burden of that monthly payment will be gone and if either of them want to go to uni or travelling, i might be able to help. If they dont need any help, then maybe there would be some free for me!!!!

my dream is to be able to stay at home with the kids, and to only have to work if i want too.

After this is realised i would love to move away from london and down to cornwall/devon and enjoy the beauty of country life.:D

somehow i feel my kids will be 30 by the time i achieve this, (currently they are 2+4!!):rotfl:
Mortgage free 04/03/2025. Thanks to this site and lots of overpayments bit by bit.
Next stop: house repairs, holiday fund, replace our very old cars, more financial security/early retirement savings.🤞
  • when i/we discovered mse we were comfortably off ..but we couldnt carry on as we were. We had his n hers brand new car's (both owned out right) no debt but were over spending, dipping regualrly into savings that were not going to last forever.

dh sold his car, bought a 3 yr old similar model and had it lpg converted, paid for double glazing, new front and back door, a new heating system (boiler & radiators ) and we went on a fab holiday.

6 months later i was shamefully still cruising in mine but knew i was on borrowed time ...I sold mine and banked £12k (we have an off set mortgage) and bought a people carrier.

Shamefully i miss my old car. If we were mortage free my husband knows i would not hesitiate ...I would walk into Audi and order a Q7.

I would like to have two holidays a year and cut down my working hours. Hubby wants to do a job he loves even if the money is low. I think the biggest thing is peace of mind.
  • Without wishing to sound too smug, I have already achieved my mortgage-free dream, before the age of 40.

But if it's any consolation, I've just discovered that I'm about to be made redundant for the second time in as many years. ;)

I paid off my mortgage at the age of 37, through a combination of hard work, sheer good luck and accident of birth, as my parents are both so frugal (that's a polite way of saying tight :D ), that money-saving habits have been ingrained since childhood.

I have recently moved to a small market town in the Pennines (apparently, it's the fourth funkiest town in the world) and am fortunate enough to overlook the most beautiful countryside from my roof terrace. My three-bedroom apartment is perfect for one, and has just been valued at £275K.

I also down-shifted from a highly-stressful corporate job to retrain as a florist, which was always my dream job. Shame I've got to go out and find another one! :D
