FLU Remedies

Hi,

Anybody have any good old fashioned flu symptom remedies ?, I'm feeling terrible at the moment and would try just about anything. Believe me, this is the real thing, not just a bad cold.

Thanks,

Keith

Before you go to bed, have a steam treatment. Boil a kettle & pour into a basin. Add a couple of drops of euculyptus oil. Get a towel, lean over the basin & cover your head & the basin with the towel so that the steam can't escape. Close your eyes so that it doesn't sting. Inhale deeply. This will clear your sinuses so make sure that you have a box of tissues to hand!

You might also want to have a hot honey/lemon/whisky drink before going to bed - I don't know that it cures anything, but it soothes the throat & is very comforting.

If you've got a very sore throat, try gargling with salt water.

Good luck - hope you're feeling better soon.

real man flu is horrible ;)

tell us your symptoms and we can maybe help - sore throat, aches in your head and joints, nausea, disorientation, slipping in and out of consciousness, fever then shivers, upset stomach, cramps, shakes ... that kinda thing?

Most of the above ! not so much slipping in and out of consciousness but everything else is spot on.

Actually, headaches seem to have passed and the joints aren't as painful, but I do have a feeling of extreme weariness.

I've only ever had flu once but was told by GP to take paracetamol to bring my temperature down.

The only other thing i found soothing was orange juice.
  • My daughter and I have both been suffering from severe colds (man flu ;)) this week and the doctor said drink plenty of water, ibuprofen and rest.

I'm getting over mine now, I had all the symptoms you described above, every day I took a paracetamol in morning and a lemsip before bed, eat lots of fruit in the day eg bannana and apple, drank plenty of water and fruitjuice, slept and rested most if the day, just make sure you do most of that and mine cleared up pretty quickly, only problem I have now is the muscle aches and mild headache still, anyway hope all is well with everyone.

Home made chicken soup! Yes, it really is more than just comforting & easy to eat when you're ill, but it has to be made with real chicken bones! They contain a natural antibioitoc which flu & colds respond too. Can't remember where I read this but I belive it is quite well established & I have used it for several years now, might just be wishful thinking but hubby & I always seem to feel much better after a batch when we have a tempreature?

I'm glad someone made the distinction between real flu and man flu. ;) I've only ever had flu once, and I thought I was dying - I couldn't even get out of bed - let alone type a message!!! ;)

And while we're on the subject, how is it that when Men are ill, they take themselves off to bed for the day, phone in sick at work, and call out in pitiful tones, could I have some parcetamol, can you shut the door - I'm going to try and get some sleep. Yet as soon as we, the mums are ill, the men !!!!!! off to work, and leave us to carry on as normal, looking after the kids. There's no day in bed with the door shut for us!!!!

Hmmmph. I feel better for that!

Grate a lump of fresh ginger into a cup, pour on hot water, leave for 10 minutes then drink the liquid.
Sage is also supposed to be good for colds/sore throats. I like the old fashioned bronchial mixture you can get from co-op or superdrug. It has liquorice in it and pepper, the kids recover rapidly after a spoonful of that!

The best thing for a sore throat IMO is disolvable asprin.
Disolve it in warm water and gargle with it, then swallow the yucky stuff after gargling.
My doctor told me to do that and it cleared up my throat within 2 days!
