Help! Letter from link financial?

Hi- last week i recieved two letters from link financial, one introducing them and another claiming a debt from a barclaycard (near £4000) has been referred to them and needs to be payed immediately. This is very strange as i have no debt, no barclaycard or even a barclays account?

The surname on the letter is mine but the forename is different but very similar to mine (misspelt by two letters). So i rang them up and told them the situation and they asked me to fax a copy of my passport and driving licence (alarm bells) obveviously i didnt in case it was a scam- then i phoned barclaycard up told them the situation and they done a check on my name and address and there were no account or card issued under my name. however since then link financial have some how got hold of my sister in laws number and keep ringing i told them if they have anything to say, say it in writing and that i wasnt going to send a copy of my passport so on...

i checked up on the company and they seem to be a registered company- im gona get a credit check done in the next few days... is there any advice on whats happening or what i can do...this really started to stress me out, any help would be appreciated..

Thank you.

Hi there. I'm not an expert on this, I'm sure someone will be along who knows better than me!!

I think a credit report is a good idea, to see if the debt is registered on there. don't forget there are a few agencies (experian and equifax that I know of) and the information they hold will differ so do get one from each - there's an article here about it.

If the debt is not there then it is a case of mistaken identity (rather than more seriously fraud or something). At some point you will, presumably, need to prove your identity so their request for info is not totally unusual. I understand you being reluctant to send it out though, not sure how you can get round that!

You can definitely request that they only communicate with you in writing, not by telephone, but make sure you do this by way of a recorded letter so that they can't deny you ever said it.

If you can, perhaps make an appointment with the CAB for some advice about what is best.

    Good luck!

Do NOT fax any copies of passport/driving licence to this, or any other, company. You have told them that you are not the person they are seeking - it is now up to them to prove otherwise.
If they persist - go to see CAB or seek legal advice.

Ask them to send YOU a copy of the Credit agreement. State you do not acknoledge the debt, its nothing to do with you and they have to prove its you that owes.

Do not send any documents to them
