Ipod won't charge - help!

My ipod is coming up with the message 'Please wait - very low battery', but won't seem to charge at all. I looked on the apple website which suggested resetting, which I've done, but it hasn't made any difference.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do/try? It's a video ipod classic 80gb.

How are you trying to charge it?

If its from usb, the usb may not have enough power going to it, especially if you're using a usb splitting device. Try using a dedicated usb or a different usb.

If you're using a wall charger, it may be an issue with the charger itself, do you have access to another charger you could test it with, or have you tried this already? (or if you have tried a wall charger, maybe try a usb)

OR are you getting a charging icon and the battery is simply not holding the charge?

This is what I do when my Ipod or OH Iphone act up.

First try charging it by a different method, (preferably with your cable and a different one) then you will know where the problem is (cable, ipod or computer).

If it works when you try it elsewhere you could-
See if other devices will connect to the port you are using to check the usb port is working properly.
Is it showing up in Itunes as connected? if not it could be a software conflict (mine will not connect if vuze is running) so close all other applications.
If there are any other devices plugged in try removing them and connecting it.
  • I'm trying to charge it via my laptop as I lost my mains charger. Have tried a couple of different usb posrts, makes no difference. Have tried camera etc in the usb ports and they are working ok.

I have the battery icon on the screen, but it has a 'no entry' sign in it, with the message 'please wait very low battery' and a moving circle sort of sign underneath 9as if something is in progress).

Just looked at my itunes - ipod is not registering on there, although it was a few days ago as I made a new playlist. Only internet explorer running (that I can see), nothing else.

I'll try and get a mains charger today and see if that helps. Cheers guys!

I don't have an ipod, so I'm don't know that you would have this, but I know my phone has an option not to charge when plugged into a computer.

If you can, check your setting and see if you can find something along these lines, or somebody else here may be able to confirm whether ipods have this feature or not.

If this is the case and you don't have enough power to enter settings, I think you will be stuck to finding a mains charger to power the device long enough to turn this off.

    Though that's all speculation.

If you don't have any luck getting it to connect but it charges from the mains these troubleshooting articles may be helpful.

  • how long are you leaving it plugged in to the USB?
if the battery IS very low, leave it there for quite a while until you get the "do not disconnect" prompt up on the ipod - only then will it appear in the itunes library.

If you've left it in for an hour and no joy, you may have a dead battery. but do try borrowing a different cable from someone perhaps, as it may be the cable as suggested above.
    Friendly greeting!
  • Only just got round to taking phone into apple store to get a new battery fitted. Unfortunately, they don't fit new batteries, they just give a new ipod! Great, you might think, but not all the stuff on my ipod is on my itunes as I lost a lot of music a couple of years back when laptop died.

Now I need to get teh music from my ipod onto laptop so I can transfer onto new ipod - how do I do that?
