9 year old IKEA card debt returns

A few months ago I recieved a letter from the Lowell Group asking for payment of £130 covering a debt from 2001 on an Ikea card.
I have moved properties a few times since and to be honest havent been great with managing my debts in the past. I spoke with the National Debtline and they refered me to sending a statute barred template found on this website as this was the first I had heard of the debt. I was also advised to check my credit rating no debts are showing at all.
I sent the template and have now recieved a follow up letter stating that the statute barred terms do not apply to me because I paid a sum of £5.03 towards the debt in October 2005. I am adamant I have not made this payment - if I would have paid anything I would have paid all of the debt in one go.
Can anyone please advise if this type of trickery is common and how I can ask Lowell to provide evidence that this payment of £5.03 has ever taken place?
Any advice would be very appreciated
Thanks

Hi ripped, don't know if the practice is common, but it doesn't surprise me with these shyster DCA's:mad: The onus is on them proving you paid, and if they cannot, then I'd be tempted to tell them to sling their hook!!! I'd write to them asking for proof of payment first, see what they come back with, then take it from there.0

Send them a prove it letter, and wait to see what they come up with, do not pay nothing, and do not take phone calls from them, keep it in writting0

They must provide proof of the payment, they cannot just state it was made.
You can certainly dispute it, saying you have checked bank statements and no payment has been made to the account. So ask for bank account number and sortcode and any further details they have on the alleged payment.
If they can't provide such information they have no provided proof you have paid, if they can provide it then you need to work out if you had really paid this account. If the numbers do not match up to your bank accounts then tell them, as its the account holder that needs to make payment.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0 -
Thankyou for the prompt advice - I am going to search for a 'prove it' letter template and adapt it if necessary.
It makes sense that if they cannot give me my bank details etc then it is a hoax - just a bit worried of having my words construed and twisted to mean something else by Lowell!
Thanks again0 -
Chancers, don't let them lie their way into you making a payment.
Be firm, tell them you know it's barred and you will be sending them "the letter""We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0 -
DCA , s , often invent a phantom payment in an effort to claim a debt is not statute barred , just send a prove it letter , see what comes back then post back here , do not sign the letter print your name .GRADUATED FIRST CLASS WITH HONORS FROM THE SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS RECOMENDED READ IF BY RUDYARD KIPLING0
