advice for DS aged 15 first job.......

Hi

Just wondering if anyone can advise me so I can help my DS....he started his first job at the begining of the holidays and today was the start of his third week. He has really struggled at school and has been offered this job following his work experience at school. They are saying they are really pleased with him and that he is doing really well, they have encouraged him and he is looking at college courses for when he leaves school, they have also discussed the possibility of an apprenticeship when he finishes school and when they go back in september he will be working saturdays there. Its the summer holidays and so it is quite rural and there are no buses so we are having to get up and drive him in the mornings and pick him up in the evening.....it about a 15 mile round trip.......and whilst I am so proud of him it means its kind of impacting on our holiday plans as i cant go on trips to visit people as planned as i have to collect him etc.... As I said its now the start of his third week and well he hasnt been paid yet??? He doesnt want to ask and he doesnt want me to ask(i have always stayed in car with the occassional hello if his boss walks past apparently mum is embarassing :rotfl:) They said on friday when everyone else got paid they would sort it out monday and today he was a bit fed up...........what would others do please??? want to help him but dont want to embarass him or ruin things for him. Sorry its such a long post

Is pay day monthly then, id politely ask the employer but your son needs to do it, tell your son something like he was counting on the money being there as he wants to buy something with it(they might be more pro active about it), just a thought

Hi thanks for reply, no pay is weekly. They paid him for his work experience which we didnt expect(and quite well too!!!) and then offered him all these opportunities, the first week the boss wasnt there pay day and we assumed the manager didnt know what the arrangements were, the second pay day the boss asked him if he was paid last week so DS said no and boss said he would sort it out today as he would need to speak to the bank manager???? then as said today nothing. I dont think the problem is they dont want to pay him or cant but i just think it needs to be mentioned but DS doesnt really know how to iykwim

Maybe something like this "i know i asked the other day but is there any news on my wages " does the boss seem approachable

Boss seems really really nice and more than approachable TBH I think the main problems are 1) Ds not sure how to ask but will and 2) Fact that DS is working and all grown up is making me feel nostalgic and still want him tied to my apron strings:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

As for getting to work ... how about a bicycle? Long term of course a moped would be perfect.

Great suggestions but its too far for a push bike and he would have to go down a dual carriage way and for the moped hes only 15 so i dont think he's old enough for one??

If the boss needs to speak to the bank manager, does that mean they want details of DS's bank account, and does he have one?

How was he paid for his work experience?

he has a savings account and the plan was to open him a better one as soon as the holidays were here but he's been at work every day so i cant get him to the bank!! they paid him by cheque for work experience made out in my name. I think DS is going to mention it in the morning to give them the day to sort things and hopefully when i pick him up he will be able to tell me.

It's 7.5 miles each way so 30-40 mins if he gets a reasonable bike. Not too far by any means, and certainly possible 1-2 days a week to let you have a couple of days to go on trips.

As for the dual carriageway check out google maps and similar services to see what routes there are. Perhaps there isn't and it isn't possible but I've been amazed at the number of times I've found a route that I didn't know existed until I checked the maps.

Another question is whether he has a mate close to work he could stay with one night a week, just to give you a break!
