Losing weight whilst breastfeeding?

Ok, I finally hit the scales 8 weeks after my gorgeous bubs was born and have decided I want to lose weight. Before I was pregnant, I was about 2 stone overweight (just got back from a loooong honeymoon in Mexico where buffets were rife :P ). So now Im way over my ideal weight.

In the past, I have just reduced carbs and hit the gym and that seems to have worked for me. However, now I am breastfeeding Im worried that no carbs will reduce my milk flow??? (Im guessing here...) So I need some advice regarding whats ok to do/not do whilst b/feeding.

If anyone else out there has had any experiences, can you help me please as I do need to start getting back into shape (for my health and my sanity!).

Thanks in advance!

I would not recommend weight loss tablets, and if you do, always read the label as some can be transferred to your baby's breast milk.

There is no harm is you losing weight, long as you don't plan on that size 0 ;)

I assume you take bubs to a clinic to be weighed? If so, why not ask the Health Visitors - I'll sure they'll have lots of info. More than anything, a good, balanced diet is essential when b/f - I wouldn't think cutting out any food groups would be a particularly good idea.

If you can, why not take bubs out on some long walks - it's an easy way for you to exercise (particularly if you walk fast!) and it will help.
  • I think perhaps eating low GI i.e. good carbs rather than low carb could be a good plan for you. Low carb can put you into ketosis and i am not sure how that would affect your milk supply. If you don`t fancy low GI then slimming world plan can be adapted for b/f mums. Whatever you eat and drink you will need to keep your portion sizes sufficient to produce milk. B/f burns a lot of calories so in itself will help you lose weight.

I echo the advice of lots of brisk pram pushing walks.
