Tesco Reclaiming Points

Options
I bought a mobile phone from Tesco's yesterday (£59.97) and found the exact one for £10 less in Argos, so I took it back this evening for a refund and they said they would be taking my clubcard points off.

I told them I had used a double points voucher and asked if they were going to replace it, as if the mobile wasn't so much more expensibe I would have kept it.

He went away and when he came back he said that he would be contacting the clubcard department to see if they are able to send me out a replacement voucher and if they can't they will leave the points on!!

Never heard of that before but wonder if they are going to ring Argos and check out my story, then make a decision regarding my points.

Can't see what the fuss is about as it only amounted to 118 points which isn't an enormous amount.

Wonder if they are clamping down in this area too?

  • Not sure bloaty, I took back an item less than 2 weeks ago and had a full refund and no mention of the removal of the bonus clubcard points that was with the item.

Maybe they were just being funny and if He did try phoning the Tesco clubcard line he would have lost the will to find out as he would have been kept on hold for ages - Welshy x

I have not yet had points deducted but it wouldn't surprise me if some stores did this. Or maybe he's just an over-zealous CS chap?

Is he going to get back to you, did you get the refund yet? If not, I think I would wait a week or so and then go in at a different time of day, make sure it's not him on CS and try again. Even better, ask your OH to do it (if you have one) just in case the same chap is called to authorise the refund as it's over £20.

Failing that, get a refund from another largish Tesco nearby if they are better at ignoring the points issue.

  • I'm wondering if you were served by the same prat I encountered in Brent Park.
He went out of his way to deduct the points of my account. I forgot my clubcard at home so he took down the details on a piece of paper so he could call HO later.

  • they could be clamping down, I got a mailer from Sainsburys recently saying they only give one Nectar point for £1 spent on fuel. Prior to this they gave one point per 50p spent across the board.

    Thanks for all your replies.

He refunded my money and said he would give me a call to let me know the outcome, didn't say when so I asked him and he said no later than Monday.

He is quite a young CS operative, we have a couple of really nice ones that are usually on with a lot more potential than this one. As some of you have indicated, I think he has to try to prove himself, whereas the others don't and are really nice with it.

I will let you know the outcome next week.

    Regards

I used to work at Tesco and as far as I know it has always been the policy to remove clubcard points if an item has been returned - most staff never do this though as it's a bit of a pain to do it and they can't be bothered to work it out! They may have made it easier to remove points now or this lad was either a) newly trained or b) they're clamping down on it. Will see what I can find out from friends that still work there.
  • Not exactly Tesco - but near enough....

A couple of weeks ago, I was stood in the queue at Boots and some old misery customer was really giving the girl behind the till some stick regarding a refund of sorts. It appears the old girl was trying to get her money back on something but the youngster was digging her heels in.

Anyway, the misery started raising her voice and demanded to speak to the manager - you know the sort. To cut a long story short, the girl backed down and refunded what appeared to be £50 odd and asked if the misery had her Boots card on her; without hesitation (habit I suppose), the misery said she had and got it out - she then realised that the girl was going to deduct the points and tried to put it discreetly back in her purse. At this point there was an audience (queue had built up) and someone shouted "She's put it back in her purse!" to which the whole of the queue burst out laughing.

Needless to say the misery got her money back - fair enough, I suppose - and the girl got the last laugh by taking all the points back......

    ....and then I got served.

I think they would have to take the points off your card there and then I was naughty and bought an ipod on offer before just for the points and returned it. They didn't take the points off which were 999 points - before I get shouted at it was only one and I couldn't resist.

    Hi

I never heard back from Tesco about removing my points so I telephoned them this evening to see what was happening.

Got a really nice young lady in CS who tried to find out who had dealt with me but he didn't appear to be on duty but she said she didn't think he would have taken the points off as although they are advised to, she said this rarely happened as most of the staff just issue a refund and ignore the points.

She advised me to contact the Clubcard department to see if he had contacted them and if he had to get back in touch with Tesco to advise them and she would look into it. Seemed to indicate that it wasn't something they encourage staff to do.

Interesting given an earlier post from an ex Tesco employee!

  • I reckon he was def just either a newbie, or a trainee jobsworth... Myself I wouldn't bother calling clubcard and just keep silent with my fingers crossed.
