Commuter Travel

My husband used to commute 2 hours 45 mins each way from Bristol to the City of London. We moved to look for a commute that was no more than 1 hour by train (plus the 5 or 10 mins each end to walk to the station/office).
The commute is £300/month.
Whilst a long commute, it is relative to the previous one, so seems manageable.
Jobs in London early on in your career make the cost and effort of the commute seem unworthwhile. However, by sticking at working in London many careers take off after about 5 years and the salary far outweighs the cost of the commute.0 -

In my case the high London salaries are the only reason I commute, though given that I face a two year pay freeze I am beginning to wonder. I believe that commuter fares above a certain level should be tax deductible.0 -
Mine is approx one hour from front door to desk, 40 mins on a good day. Living at a terminus station means I always get a seat, and the District Line is mostly above ground so nice views of leafy SW London along the way, often featuring sunbathing foxes. Commuting by train/tube means lots of time for reading- my London mates seem to read far more than those who live elsewhere and have to commute by car. Trapped in a traffic jam with Chris Moyles- could there be a worse start to the day? They are an EYESORES!!!!0

As long as London wages remain higher than rest of the country, long commute will be unavoidable.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0

I live in Kentish Town, work in Whitechapel.
I'm gonna walk it from now on - about an hour."An arrogant and self-righteous Guardian reading tvv@t".
!!!!!! is all that about?0 -
I live 3-4 miles form work, takes an hour to walk down a 40mph road but with some nice fields and a few horses to look at.
Tried using a bike but I'm very unhealthy and work is on top of a hill -saves time but I arrive sweating like a horse and ready to drop!
Going home was fun though

I used to have an hour commute each way however 2 years ago they closed the plant where I worked and I now get to work from home.
Would hate to have to go back to doing any sort of commute at all as working from home spoils you!0 -
Mine is 90 mins each way - and I only work part-time!!
- drive to station
- 30 mins on train
- underground and Docklands Light Railway
Cost of annual season ticket, including underground and DLR travel, was £3960 the last time I renewed it last October. 3hrs of travel for 4.5hrs of working every day!0 -
Hi,
Well I am just about to start commuting to the edge of London - 65 miles each way - can take anything from 1.5 hours upto 3 hours - before that I was commuting 90 miles each way each day (or thou some nights I stayed over).

i did the same, and then realise that i could just sit at home in my front room wearing only my pants, spread betting all day. needless to say i have never looked back. the good thing about spread betting is you can reinvest your profits and make even more money.
only the other day i bought ronnie wood's house the other day for £13 million. not because i wanted it, but because i wanted to bulldoze it and burn the picture of myra hindley/kate moss.0
