You are not, you cannot be held liable for someone elses debts on there death, if you are not named on the debt. You do not inherit debts.
The point been made is that your father had assets, and they belonged to him. Therefore on death those assets are sold or secured against in order to pay of his debts. Only his estate is used to pay his debts. Not yours or your moms.
If he owed £100,000 but only owned £20,000 of a house, then the remainder of £80,000 is written off however the £20,000 is secured by the creditor.
If your mother owned the house outright, and the debts were solely in your fathers name, the debt would be written off as there is no estate to make a claim on. This is not the case in this circumstance, there is an estate and until the debts are paid to creditors.
Trying to dodge paying debts may make you personally liable to repay it, which is why i advise you seek professional advice.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
